The downfall began.
Got off to a great start by harping on how he's been "in the back with the boys brother" all day, despite the narrative of everyone waiting for Hogan's limo to show up.

I remember posting here that Hogan would kill TNA years ago....people said I was nuts, well look where they are now a shell of themselves I had doubts from the first announcement but tried to stay positive. And to be fair, some of the stuff Hogan talked about doing sounded okay on paper. But after that first episode of Impact with him on it, it became downhill SO fast.

That show was the most surreal thing ever. Hogan, Bischoff, Hall, Nash, Waltman in the ring, Sting in the rafters. It was like Nitro and this was right after Dixie publicly said "we're not here to recreate history".
And at the same time, Michaels and Bret Hart were in the ring on Raw. Amazing night in pro wrestling.

Oh, cool, doesn't appear as though I posted in that thread. Not surprising, I remember I didn't hear about the Hogan thing until well after the fact and it was on the WWE board.
I seem to recall my initial reaction pretty much being, "That's weird and kind of pointless, but maybe it'll do something to boost TNA's profile." Bischoff I thought was a terrible idea from the word go.

TNA killed off any chance of getting any new fans interest whatsoever with that show. Especially THAT opening match.

Raw drew 5.6 million viewers that night, and Impact drew 2.2 million (including 3 million for the Hogan segment).
That may have been the last great night in wrestling, from a viewership standpoint. I'm pretty sure Raw never drew 7.8 million viewers after WCW died. Getting nearly 8 million wrestling viewers on a Monday night was a big deal looking back on it today, especially with Raw struggling to get 3.5 million viewers nowadays and TNA going on a network where they'll have trouble getting 500k.

"Okay we're going to have some really big fan interest for this show, we've got to start out with something big."
"I've got it! Lets have a cage match that ends in a DQ 5 minutes in! Then we'll follow it up with the Nasty Boyz!"

This. At the time, I thought, good for them, swinging for the fences. The problem was TNA - they never deliver on a promise, so that first show was absolute dick and they lost all the new viewers.

I still can't believe that TNA show happened.
Bubba the Love Sponge finding Beer Money knocked out.
The beloved Mick Foley, a legend curious fans would actually want to see, not being allowed in the arena.
Jeff Jarrett giving a touching babyface "We've made it" promo with genuine sentiment for the fans getting tarnished from an, I guess, babyface Hogan promo telling him to get in line and kind of making them both sound like heels.
I remember DVRing both shows to watch later that night. I hadn't watched TNA in a number of years and had only recently gotten back into watching WWE a few months prior after a break.
I started with the Bret-Shawn reunion at the top of Raw, loved it, but was very curious about TNA so I stopped right after. Then, I watched the entirety of that Impact, which was like a serious of trump cards in terms of poor choices. They interviewed fans who made TNA fans seem like idiots and then booked a show that made the viewing audience feel like idiots for watching. And then Raw was such a better show I didn't even think TNA could have the benefit of the doubt for getting back on track.

The only good things about the TNA Jan 4th show was the Knockout Tag Title match and AJ vs Kurt. But that's like finding five bucks after you've waded through sewage. You got yourself five dollars but you're covered in grimy sewage and will likely never get the stench off of you. And a week later Bubba The Obese Whale opens his mouth and begins the downfall of The KOs division.

Didn't they have somethign weird develop around this time, or am I thinking of another Impact?

Don't forget Hogan screwing up their own continuity within 5 seconds of screen time with "I've been in the back all day brother" after like an hour showing us Hogan's limo on it's way to the impact zone.

The Impact after, Hogan said due to Flair's interference Kurt would get one final shot at AJ and they go and pull that.
