Was there issue backstage , maybe with Vince, where Mankind weight was a issue ?
He wasn't a blob or anything but he wasn't in the best shape , I know there have been plenty of "fat" wrestlers but Foley always seemed just out of shape ... Anyways yeah so was this ever talked about backstage ? 0.0

I'm not sure if there was an issue backstage, but to me it added to his appeal. If he was a chiseled, svelte dude I don't think the gimmick would have worked as well.

He was in shape...only he was shaped like a pear. Wasn't as noticeable early in his career but when he wrestled in brown tights it wasn't all that flattering. I always felt concerned for Taker whenever he got him up for the tombstone...he looked like he was in prime position for a "surprise."

I think the only time it was noted as an issue were his "post-retired" matches. Some big guys can just go. Foley, Umaga, Bubba, etc

In Foley's 2nd book he talks about Vince being reluctant to put him in the main event vs. HHH in early 2000 because he was so out of shape. After it was obvious Big Show was tanking as champion they put the title back on HHH and Vince told Foley to get in better shape for the Rumble street fight.

I think 99 it became obvious especially when he started wearing sweatpants. I think the attire change to wearing the corporate shirt in 98 was suppose to hide the fact, because you would've thought whenever he went face again he wouldn't wear the white buttoned shirt anymore since he wasn't trying to be corporate anymore, but he continued to.

Mick has always been varying levels of sloppy-fit. He's never looked like Chris Masters, but he's never sucking wind fifteen minutes into a match either.
He got gooier as time went on, but it wouldn't have probably even registered with people had he not taking a liking to always dressing like someone making an impromptu 3:00A.M. Walmart run for the latter half of his WWE career.

Foley was always out of shape and never had any gains to lose in the first place. His role was to absorb punishment and take sick bumps and chair shots to make up for his lack of in ring talent and lack of proper physique.
If you watch his matches he wrestles with his mouth open gasping for air as he is gassed throughout his entire match. Think if him like an obese Spike Dudley.
The boys in the back always lacked true respect for him as proven by what Rock did to him with a chair while handcuffed.
You know you suck as a wrestler when you need to agree to take a dangerous possibly life ending bump off hell in a cell to make the match decent.
I did like Foley though he entertained me but I assure you he pays a heavy price for his career each and every day he gets out of bed.

If you watch his matches he wrestles with his mouth open gasping for air as he is gassed throughout his entire match. Think if him like an obese Spike Dudley. You're doing Foley a huge disservice by saying he had a lack of in-ring talent. He was a solid amateur wrestler and could actually rely on that when the occasion called for it... but let's be honest - nobody went to see a Cactus Jack or Mankind match for chain wrestling, so the occasion never called for it. In his prime, Foley was hell of a worker who could have a good-great match with almost anybody. Granted, when he hit the comedic phase of his career his ring work did suffer. By his own admission he sucked at that point from a technical standpoint, but it was what was over with the fans at the time. Why bust your ass doing something different when the fans are still clamouring for what you've been doing already? The whole idea behind that was at the time he felt the pressure that they had to top the Taker-HBK match, but he just wasn't over with the crowds due to the botched heel turn earlier in the year and Taker was working with a broken foot, thus wasn't capable of doing very much. They could have gone out there and wrestled a standard Cell match, and it would have been okay given their limitations, but forgotten about by the end of the year. The bump off the top of the Cell was stupid, but it worked because we're still talking about it a decade and a half later.

I remember watching Cactus Jack wrestle in the USWA since that would be coming on right when I came home from school. Even back then he was wearing the flannel so you couldn't really tell how fit he was. He seemed normal sized back then though.
Also he was doing the elbow drop off the apron onto a prone opponent laying right on the concrete then too which I never understood how it didn't break his hip. That's the first time I saw him do the "BANG BANG!" thing. He'd always do that after hitting that spot.

Foley is an example as how the drive to physical perfection is SOMETIMES unnecessary.
Maybe it's just me but in this post-steroid world(well,in some cases) I find a lot the modern physiques generally unimpressive anyway. Guys like Orton have great bodies but it's not like back in the day where they'd look like they'd struggle to fit through a door. Unless your physique is mind-boggling I don't think it matters. A lot of guys look "alright" today and their physique is neither an asset nor a disadvantage.

Not really. If anything, he said guys often joked he'd kill his gimmick if he was too in shape.

He was in good shape, even for the way he looked. After the Hell in a Cell match though, he gained a bit more weight due to injuries and hurting a lot.

It's called a joke. I thought the boys in the back comment would give away it was a joke to even the dimmest posters but I guess I was incorrect. The entire point I was trying to make about Foley is being physically fit gives you a much better chance of not being a cripple after you stop wrestling. When I wrestled for four years in the late 80's I was not in the best shape I could have been and paid for it later in life. It's sheer luck - not talent - that Foley is even alive, let alone walking no matter how much pain he is in to do so. Being physically fit has far more advantages than just looking better and getting Vince sexually excited, it gives you the best chance of having a decent life after you are done in the ring.

Y'know what gives a wrestler a REALLY good chance of not being in pain later in life? Not wrestling like Mick Foley did. I dunno why I even said that; you clearly know and just think you're scoring some kind of anti-IWC points.

Yeah, he had a weird (but I didn't think out of shape) frame to him, compared to other guys. The thing that always struck me was that he looked shorter compared to MANY other wrestlers. So I naturally started to assume he was my height (5'10") or a bit taller. Then, after having known of him for 15 years probably, I met him at a autograph show a few years back. .........the man was AT LEAST a foot taller than me. That, compiled with surrounding years of meeting wrestlers who were as tall or maybe even shorter than me, has skewed my comprehension of wrestler sizes and shapes forever.
