Yeah I'm sure the kid's grades skyrocketed when he finds himself with nothing to do but study because all of his friends suddenly abandoned him.

I dunno why, but I find these kinds of deals to be rather hilarious.
That'll also teach them that hair is a privelage, not a right.

This is basically a "scarlet letter" type of thing.
Let's do it to adults and see how funny it is then

Can this be said to be the unusual part of "cruel and unusual punishment"?

What does an All in the Family spinoff have to do with an Elephant King from Africa?

If you think this is cruel and unusual punishment to a misbehaving kid, or that parents will abuse it for no apparent reason- just keep in mind:
Kids, especially kids who would misbehave, have an uncanny ability to idolize things that are meant to shame them like this as a badge of honor and proof that you are "one badass mofo" (I'm reminded of when one school system tried punishing kids by making them wear prison jumpsuits, and kids in that school quickly deciding the jumpsuits were cool and they wanted to wear them.
In this area, guaranteed within three months the George Jefferson cut is a huge fad in town and every kid WANTS the cut.

Humiliation is never a deterrent of bad behavior. Forcing your kid to get one of these reeks of lazy parenting.

Between this and the NFL player who beat his child and was actually defended by some people including Charles Barkley, there is an unsettling theme here of black parents using punishments (whipping and de-humanising humiliation) that were regularly applied during the days of slavery.

Good thing Charles Barkley speaks for all black people so everyone else can easily come to conclusions about the parenting practices of the black community as a whole
