It's funny to think that if they had gone with Reigns vs. Rusev this year for 'Mania, the crowd would probably be hugely behind Roman. If the office really believes in him, then he'd be a great choice to end Rusev's undefeated streak, give the US belt to, and let him run with it clear to next year's 'Mania, where he'd either be ready to main event, or at least in a highly featured match. Kind of ironic, as that'd be the more "let's wait and see where this goes" approach over what they actually did. Hell, they'd have been better off having them feud a couple months back when Roman was wasting his and everyone else's time with Big Show (including Show); at least that woulda seemed like a step forward momentum wise. I don't know where the US title would factor into that, but eh, when was the last time it's mattered at all in WWE? Wouldn't you have to go back to Cena's spinner version?

Honestly, I've pretty much stopped buying the idea that wins can make people or at least, in a modern setting, it can't really. There are some that would benefit somebody under the right circumstances - like Swagger would probably be way better off right now if he'd beaten Rusev at SummerSlam - but I think it only really works if things are lining up for the person heading in anyway, and in the long run, giving a rub really doesn't mean much of anything. As a result I don't think Lesnar losing to Reigns is going to do a damn thing to stop him from being a complete flop as a main eventer.
Granted, and I know the hernia would've screwed this up anyway, I think they'd be in a better state right now if they'd done Lesnar / Reigns at Survivor Series and had Lesnar win clean in a close, hard-fought fight with Reigns now seeking to prove himself in a rematch. Then there'd be an actual story instead of, "Reigns is the man and he's related to Rock so cheer for him CAUSE I'M VINCE MCMAHON GODDAMMIT."

One thing that's hindered Reigns is the mid card titles being a prop for eternal mid carders rather than a stepping stone for the main event.
Can't help but think Reigns would have a bigger fanbase and be readier for mania if he'd had a 6 month run as a fighting IC champion beforehand.
Their work as IC and US champ respectively did HBK and Cena wonders in being accepted into the main event.
