Roman Reigns is going to fail as the top babyface.
And it's not going to be his fault. Not one bit.
Ironically the reason he's going to fail is because they are giving him every possible chance. They are trying to book him as they perceive how the top babyface should be.
The problem is that it's not going to work because everybody can see right through it, or at least a large majority of people already have. And the more they push the more that will.
Roman isn't ready. People have said this for months now. Yet they had him win the Royal Rumble. They've said that maybe they should do a three way at Mania to protect Roman. Instead they had him prove himself as the better man. Now it's pretty much confirmed, and there's no stopping the train now. We're getting that one on one match.
Except there's a huge chance that train is going to wreck in spectacular fashion, especially once we get to Mania itself. Lesnar and Reigns is a completely unproven match. Reigns isn't good enough yet to carry a match on his own, and we have no idea about Brock's status. We have no idea how much effort he'll put in to try and get this guy over. Not only that, but with the recent problems from the most recent Raw, if they happen to piss him off enough he might just go out there and make Roman look like utter garbage. I doubt that will happen, but this company has done far dumber things, alot of which occurred in the past year actually.
This time next year Roman will be lucky to be the new Sheamus. At least if they keep going in this absurd direction with the guy. If they keep pushing him as this unstoppable, unfathomable deity-like figure that everybody has to go out of their way to put over constantly, it's just gonna make the fans resent him even more then they already do. Not to mention it may make those who might actually think he's still cool (Those who didn't hear stuff like the Suffering Succotash fiasco and the Beanstalk Story promos) quickly change their mind.
And like many I liked Roman Reigns when he was part of The Shield. Not at first, but the guy won me over? How? By coming across as a world beater, and a guy who was the closest thing WWE had to a guy who could be considered cool. That's absolutely not the case anymore.
Vince McMahon is one of the most stubborn men in the world. He's not just trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. He's using a damn jackhammer to force it through, and it's just not working no matter how hard he tries. Worse, he's doing constant damage to the guys chances the harder he pushes. He's had Rock endorse him, he's had Daniel Bryan endorse him, and I'm sure there will be many others who do in the future.
And the sad part is if Reigns fails then aside from Cena there will be no top faces, or top heels even. Because everybody else has been booked into oblivion. Even the guys that might have some hope like Rusev or Seth Rollins, honestly I don't know how long it'll be until they fall into the abyss that is WWE Creative.
WWE this past year has been in the most depressing state that I've ever seen. There's is no future on that roster right now. Everybody has been marginalized. The top heel is the freaking Authority, a group that NOBODY asked to come back. Yet they brought them back anyway. Big Show and Kane are constantly put in a position of prominence, in 2015. The fact that a guy like Big Show is beating your supposed top babyface clean is just absurd.
I haven't watched Raw in months. I still read the results, and I still listen to people discussing it, but I just don't feel like watching anymore. Of course the fact that the show is three hours now certainly doesn't help matters.
I didn't even watch Fastlane live last week, or at all. I considered it, but I decided not to because I honestly didn't care. That's what the product has done. In fact if it weren't for NXT I'd probably cancel my subscription.
Speaking of which, oh boy... NXT. People talk about how they have all these great talents down in NXT right now just waiting to be made stars. But me, I don't buy it. I think the minute they come up and Vince gets his grimy mitts on them they're all going to be just like the rest of the promising talent out there.
This whole year has really made me think long and hard if I still enjoy wrestling. I still love to discuss it and read about it, and I've watched plenty of great matches. Wrestle Kingdom 9 was a great show, and it didn't make me feel like this when I get done.
The day that Vince steps down is the day I let out a huge sigh of relief. But I have to wonder when that will be... and what state the company will be in by that point, or if it will still be the same thing.
I probably will watch Wrestlemania, but only out of morbid curiosity regarding Reigns vs Lesnar. There's nothing I'm really excited about. Which is amazing since this time last year I was excited to be able to watch Wrestlemania on the Network for the first time.
After that? Well, maybe I'll take a break from the WWE for awhile. Give Lucha Underground a chance. Subscribe to New Japan World again and get my wrestling fill on there. I'll still have the NXT Takeover Specials, at least.
So yeah, that's my little rant. Agree. Disagree. That's just my take on things right now.
