I remember Jim Ross trying to cover for what we were watching by reminding everyone that the wrestlers were out of their element.

Lots of "this isn't wrestling it's just a barroom brawl" and so forth.
I need to go back and watch when Bart Gunn kicks Dr. Death's ass just to hear what JR said. Dude probably cried about that one.

Brawl for All was an incredibly stupid idea. Here you have your performers under contract, who get hurt enough as it is, participating in real shoot fighting...not knowing how to protect themselves in boxing matches, repeatedly pounding themselves in the head. Absolute concussion city and an idea that needed to be shitcanned immediately
They bring in Dr. Death, who I'm sure was a tough guy and had a cool name, but could never get over in North America. I'm guessing they thought he would take this thing based on reputation alone. Nope...knocked out cold and nobody bought him as a tough guy since.

Brawl for All is shitty for the real injuries guys got for basically no gain, and the same problem "MMA" gimmicky fights fail with me in wrestling, or boxing exhibitions, etc: You don't really want to highlight "no, we're really fighting THIS time". No holds barred is different, and that I am fine with, but putting on shorts and gloves shouldn't transform you into something special.
Only good thing to come of it was Ezekiel Jackson's awesome as hell theme.

I felt really embarrassed for Marc Mero in there trying to have a boxing match against grapplers. I've always wondered if that was his idea.

Dr Death was once over in North America, but he was out of his era, had a stupid outfit and was poorly booked.

Bad idea, bad execution and bad follow up.
Apparently, after Bart Gunn won, people backstage started telling him he could beat anybody and not to worry about being booked into a straight boxing match against a pro boxer. Like they really built him up in his head just so they could laugh when he got knocked out and then released.

Vince: "We should revive the Brawl for All concept"
*Brock eagerly signs new contract*
6 months later the WWE is full of NXT call ups after so many Superstars died in what historians will refer to as the "Red Raw Massacre"

wasn't everything post-Dr. Death knockout all worked anyway? Nah, it was all shoot. Here's the finals if you are interested, with Bart Gunn clearly knocking some brain cells out of Bradshaw. www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9JOEYxwwbk

Shawn Michaels was there and spoke about how out of their element these guys are and how they're tough and deserve respect, he even put Bart Gunn over after he won and said that Bart can take this to the next level. They even plugged UFC events during the Brawl 4 All. Anyways, Hardcore Holly's take on the Brawl 4 All:

Was a lot of fun listening to Ross trying to downplay Bart's accomplishment over Deathy.

Bob Holly did a good write up of Brawl for All in his book. The things that stuck out for me: -- The WWF paid Williams the winner's prize before it even started, because JR was so convinced he was going to destroy everyone. Dr Death was then in line to work a program with Austin. -- Steve Blackman was fully prepared to unleash his martial arts on the other competitors, asking if it was legal to kick out guys' knees. -- JR was the one who helped talk Bart into an unwinnable fight with Butterbean, out of spite for knocking out "his boy."
