Am I right in thinking WWE did this at one point with submissions? I am sure they at least did it during the mid 2000's hell I think it was used in the finishing stretch of Holly/HBK/HHH at WM20 before HHH ultimately tapped out.
Why did they stop using it? I think it is a great hot finish and a great way to get the crowd (even more) invested into a finish

I think that MMA put an end to that since it became popular and wrestling started to get slightly more realistic.

This was prominent in the 1980s and 1990s, especially for the sleeping holds, headlocks, and the cobra clutch. Typically, it would lead to a babyface spot where the babyface would come alive after his arm fell twice. The babyface would make a fist a start shaking his arms and then start a comeback.

Because it became pretty damn telegraphed that they would get the second wind before the third drop.

It just does not make any sense and I think they have realized this. If a wrestler is unable to feel his arm being moved, he shouldn't he awake when this is done two more times with the hold still applied.

Was there any times of note where we assumed someone would come alive on 3, but the arm dropped anyway?

Didn't they use this pretty recently when Rock beat Cena?

Didn't HHH get a fall over Rock in their iron man match with the ref dropping Rock's arm three times?
I remember it being weird since we hadn't seen that in forever.

I remember seeing it sometimes when I first started watching in the early 2000s. I thought they were gonna do it in the Rusev/Cena match at Fastlane

I don't feel like they did that spot with the Sharpshooter, but they might have. The Angle Lock was usually the tap out or reach for the ropes spot. I think the arm drops were used for the Wall of Jericho. Might be wrong.

Hell one of Hogan's big come backs was the third arm drop Hulk up.
They still do it occasionally usually with sleepers... for some reason when they are actually going for knock out submissions they only test once... which makes no damned sense.

I remember them doing it that way. And I remember WCW for awhile doing a three-count when a person seemed to go unconscious instead of the arm drop. I always preferred it that way, made it seem much more realistic and as if you had to be tougher to be in WCW, as snapping out of it before a three-count seemed more daunting than to answer before a third arm drop.

You know when I vividly remember them going to one arm drop as the signal? The Masterpiece challenge. Was very jarring as a life long fan seeing the ref call it after one arm drop

Always preferred the one arm drop as a rule because why would the ref do it three times? Surely if the person's arm drops like that you should stop it pretty much then and there for the safety of the competitor? I like the arm drop as a finish, just not the three arm drop variety.

Was there any times of note where we assumed someone would come alive on 3, but the arm dropped anyway? Hogan against Lesnar. Smackdown, Summer 2002. Brock ate Hogan for dinner. Brock killed Hogan after the match for dessert.
