It seems like I see a lot of hate for this match despite it for a long time being regarded as one of the all-time great WWE matches. It's almost cool to say "Nah, that match was never good. It's boring and I hate it!"
I for one, still enjoy the match quite a lot. I think it's an excellently put together match and there isn't as many rest holds as people make out. I know a lot of people prefer the Rock/HHH style of iron man match with lots of falls and shenanigans. But I think it'd get boring if they did the same type of iron man match every time.
Both guys gave it their all in this match and it just tells a great story. Not enough matches do that these days. Any match that goes longer than 20 minutes seems to resort to finisher after finisher, but not this one.
Personally I'd rank it in definitely the Top 20 WrestleMania matches of all time, pushing top 10. I'd need to think about it a bit more.
What say you?

Maybe it's the fact that I enjoy good mat wrestling but I LOVED that match.

Loved that match at the time and still love it to this day. Greatest match of the 90s in my opinion.

It's a really, really good match that I never need to watch again.

I always say that it's a good-to-great 25 minute match that's stretched out into an hour.

It was great at the time but it doesn't hold up. There's far better Iron Man Matches out there which is ashame since Bret and Shawn were at their peaks in 96 and couldn't put it together. Rock/HHH Iron Man at Judgment Day 2000, now THERE'S an Iron Man Match. Also, Brock/Kurt on that Smackdown in 2003. That's my personal favorite.

Me too. I just liked the action, I really wouldn't have minded the headlocks so much if it wasn't for being 0-0.
I think a 3-2 finish would be better.
HBK: Moonsault, Countout, Sweet Chin Music in Overtime Bret: Small Package, Sharpshooter with 0:01 seconds left to tie the match.
Would make for so much more drama.

It was a decent match but there were some things in it that bothered me. Like when Shawn was working over Bret's arm for ages and Bret just no sells it.
Other than that, it's watchable.

The reason it went 0-0 was because Bret and Shawn threw a tantrum over who would take the first fall. Both flatly refused and thus it went 0-0. Looses its shine doesn't it.

That is some of the dumbest shit that I've ever heard. That's almost Van Hammer levels of not wanting to be Pvt. Stash in MIA because he'd be the lowest ranked member never mind that the joke doesn't work if he's not a Private.

I really liked it. I was rooting heavily for Bret, so I did have strong negative feelings, but that's the same type of feeling you'd feel when your team loses a game. Watching it years after the fact, I had more appreciation for it.

No. For two reasons, A) people being whiny bitches backstage doesn't change how good the match is and B) I don't believe that story because it makes no sense. There was a first fall and Bret was the one who lost. Also Bret and Shawn were still on decent terms back then.

They lucked out in that Major Stash still sort of works, but Private would have been funnier. Yeah, both were definitely in a petty part of their lives, which wasn't helped by how much they couldn't stand each other. Kind of makes me wonder if Bret would have stayed if Shawn had made good on his implicit threat to leave to WCW.

It's a great match. They wrestle like two babyfaces who know they're going an hour and have to be defensive and neither guy wants to make mistake. Instead of doing the easy thing and making it "exciting" and doing a bunch of falls, they both (barely) keep their babyface cool, stayed with the story and built awesome tension.
That said, the fact that so many people think it sucked and walked out says that it was a misfire in terms of a WrestleMania main event. But for my somewhat off-beat tastes, I thought it was great.

Shawn also said in his book and several shoot interviews that both him and Bret agreed that if both guys were booked to be the best, then it should be tied towards the end. He stated it didn't seem right for either guy to be pinning each other a lot and gaining falls. In Shawn's words "If we're that easy to beat, then neither of us should be wrestling for the championship", which is something Bret apparently agreed with.

I've never seen it, so I can't really comment on it. Not because I think it'd be bad or anything, but I feel like with Iron matches, if you don't see them live, they aren't worth going back to see later.
