2014 and it's not even close. You can't even call the 1998 movie a Godzilla film. Add into the fact that even TOHO was impressed as hell and has given them the reason to start making more movies themselves. I honestly facepalm anytime I hear that you don't see him that much TBH. If you rewatch the older movies again you realize it's kind of a running theme where you have to sit through an hour of boring characters and hilarious plots to get to Godzilla vs Whoever. (Not every movie is like that but a lot are) Still boring. And they at least had portions of the monsters in the lead-up and didn't pretend to show them and cut to a tv someplace. Meanwhile, while Godzilla 2014 was awful, I doubt this will be a Street Fighter vs. Chun Li situation. It was crazy how overnight, the Raul Julia version was redeemed and everyone's favorite after Chun Li came out. Before that, it was considered to be worse than electric crab torture.

i get people saying the 2014 movie was boring, but the 1998 was almost an experiment in how bad a major movie could be. when the last "baby Godzilla" was hatched at the end people were throwing stuff at the screen. but yeah, great soundtrack though.

The ONLY good thing to come from the 1998 film was the awesome cartoon show. That's it.
2014 Godzilla was, well ok yes it was flawed, but it was still a Godzilla film and TOHO isn't going to have its giant reptilian monster get jobbed out like a little bitch.

2014, by far.
Even if they bait and switched with Cranston.

My interest in 2014 Godzilla died when Cranston did. 1998 Godzilla is incredibly stupid, but it's enjoyably so for me.

Oh no, that won't happen. Street Fighter the Movie at least works as a goofy little action film for kids, and the guy that played Zangief was hilarious. To this day I don't know what Zilla 98 was going for, is it supposed to be scary or farcical? Was I supposed to take Matthew Broderick (who I like, but he should never be allowed near adventure movies ever again) seriously as a scientist as much as I did with Ken Watanabe?

I'll take the 1998 version any day. Was the 1998 version a masterpiece? Not at all but it at least entertained me in parts. The 2014 version just bored me terribly. It had nothing to do with how many times Godzilla shows up. I found none of the characters interesting and the movie just dragged along.

2014 beyond all question. Because it actually freaking looked like Godzilla.

I haven't seen the 1998 film since I was 7 so I can't really compare but the one that I give the 2014 Godzilla brownie points for is not making CGI barf fights where you have no idea what the f*** is actually happen like in the transformers film. You can clearly see Godzilla fighting the other monster clearly in a heavyweight style fight in a impressive scale rather then fast moving barf monsters with bunch of quick cuts and zoom ins that you have no idea what's going on. {Spoiler}But holy shit the bait and switch with Bryan Cranston was just bad. He went all out in his performance humanizing the film and made me actually care about his family. Then when he fell down were like crap he's dead really? Nope he's actually still alive. Thank God that means he'll probably appear in the end of the film or in the sequels. Wait no he just died later anyways from the same injuries? They should of killed him off on the spot rather to tease me like that.
Also what the hell Aaron Johnson? Dude rocks a lot of personality in the kick ass films but everything else I seen him in he's just horribly bland

1998 was dumb as all hell, the 'Godzilla' was terrible, and it had Matthew Broderick and Maria Pitillo. But it had Hank Azaria and Jean Reno hamming it up, and was entertaining in a train wreck kind of way.
2014 had a great Godzilla but only gave him about ten minutes of screen time (much of which is shrouded in darkness and dust). It had Bryan Cranston but killed him off in the first act. It had Ken Watanabe but did nothing with him. The rest is boring and forgettable.
Advantage: 1998.

I'm glad to see opinion on last year's film has turned towards it being an underwhelming. I was completely baffled at how many people praised it to the high heavens when it came out.

I disliked it from probably the moment the boring guy became the main character. I recall it being polarizing at the time, with people either loving it or being very disappointed.

I'm surprised the 2014 movie is getting hated on. I thought I was the only one who didn't like it.
To me, the movie was just forgettable. It's one of those movies you immediately forget about after you see it, because there is not a single thing that allows for it to stand out on it's own, which is a shame.
I hate the 1998 version more on the principle of Matthew Broderick and Roland Emmerich; two people who shouldn't be allowed to make movies at all.

See, I don't think 98 ever crossed over into 'so bad it's entertaining' territory. It was just bad.

2014 has a lot of problems, but I'd watch it over 1998 any day. I fail to see how 1998 was any less boring than 2014 is, and the latter at least has a great-looking Godzilla.

2014 is better for those fans who wanted to see Godzilla fight other monsters
I preferred the 1998 plotline about Godzilla finding a breeding ground. I also love the way the finale occurs with Godzilla trapped on the bridge. The build up to Godzilla's first appearance is superbly built up, with the attack on the Japanese ship, the giant footprint and the ship on the beach with giant clawmarks in it.

obviously 2014 even if it was a bit slow the monster scenes were great. I think the sequels will be even better because the first (2014) was just setting the pace the sequels should all be about throwing more and more monsters until we get a high budget take on final wars and legendery pictures are the right guys to do it

2014 doesn't have anything as weirdly sexist as "Godzilla's a boy who can get pregnant by reproducing asexually" as a device to explain why Godzilla's laying eggs instead of, you know, trusting a female to be the lead title character in your summer blockbuster.

I'd have just outright made Godzilla female in that 1998 movie. Which would set up a sequel when someone asked "hey, if this was a girl....where the hell is the male?"
Cue uber-Godzilla in the second film.
