Just watched the 2014 movie on HBO tonight. Not a masterpiece but it's better the 1998 one. Way better.

I dig the 2014 flick, did not dig the 98 one. 2014 with ease for me.
For the record my fav Godzilla movie is GMK, then Final Wars, then vs Destoroyah.

I think that 2014 being both long and boring helps it for Heisei fans.

1998 was bad... but at least it wasn't boring. I can watch through that again and not be bored.
It's shocking really that both are bad. How hard can it be to write a good Godzilla film?

Honestly? I'd rather watch 1998 again than 2014.
It's awful and cheesy but I don't feel like going into a coma to get away from the boredom with it. "He destroyed the garden?! NOW I'm pissed!"

'14 GZ was far from perfect, but i'd rather watch it 5 times in a row instead of that 98 midget-pregnant-dead-by-rockets lizard.

Hank Azaria playing a bad New York stereotype and Jean Reno being Jean Reno is more entertaining than anything in G'14.

If you rewatch the older movies again you realize it's kind of a running theme where you have to sit through an hour of boring characters and hilarious plots to get to Godzilla vs Whoever. (Not every movie is like that but a lot are) Kinda what I was thinking. Some of the 1998 arguments and, more specifically, arguments against 2014 make me wonder if they've even seen a Godzilla movie before 1998.

The original 1954 movie barely had any Godzilla from what I remember.

I've never seen a Gojira movie, but if I did, I guarantee both of the Godzilla movies would still suck.

The original 1954 movie barely had any Godzilla from what I remember. That is correct. In fact in plenty of Godzilla films had it where it took a long time before Godzilla showed up.

It almost makes me forget everything that came before it and I'm pumped up again.

I can't fathom enjoying the '98 Godzilla outside of a few decent scenes. It's one of those flicks that encapsulates the mid-to-late 90s "just throw CGI on it" era, the type of movie that came out with a first run DVD release in the early 2000s that'd you'd buy, put on your shelf, and absolutely never open. The Rifftrax'ing of it was solid, but it's just not good after that.
I actually enjoyed the 2014 Godzilla, largely because it actually was a Godzilla movie. I didn't like the bait and switch with Bryan Cranston, but still left the theater satisfied.

If Godzilla 2014 had been 96 (Gojira) or 80 minutes (Godzilla KOTM) long rather than the modern "f*** you audiences" bloated 2hr+ running time it probably would've worked better. If you cut out all the bullshit there probably is a tolerable 80 minute movie in there. But yeah, there are plenty of boring useless Godzilla movies (especially Heisei, Millenium), and last year gave us another.

98 was really a Godzlla movie because come on it looked nothing like anything from movies passed. At less 2014 did. It also was all jumping into the water like a driver. It hide Under ground? Something that big magicly got under Manhattan and then have babies in MSG? I mean what a horrible plot.

I watcheed the 1998 version recently and was amazed at how great the special effects were, I think it holds up amazing to this day.

They showed the original at a theater here in Chicago when the new one came out. It was really great seeing it on the big screen (this being a small theater, the big screen was really more of a medium screen with 50 or so seats, but still) The original is really great, especially when you think about it in the context that it was released not even a decade after the atomic bomb dropped

But I couldn't, so I don't. Seriously, who thought it would be a great idea to have the majority of the final battle happen in near pitch darkness?
