JBL vs. Matt Hardy for Armageddon 2005. The feud was set up two days before for this very random match-up. Wasn't this match basically just punishment for Matt after the Edge feud?

It was punishment for getting out of the ring instead of taking a bump for Undertaker when he returned at Survivor Series 05.

In 1989, WCW turned their biggest PPV of the year into a gimmick PPV with the Iron Man and Iron Team Tournaments, which were round robin tournaments. And then, in 1991 and 1992, they did the Lethal Lottery, which was a cool concept but should have been done on a separate PPV. I'll never understand why WCW would do those on their WrestleMania.

Man, my youth was FILLED with questionable matches on PPV. But back then, we didn't commonly get name vs. name matches on TV outside Prime Time or the Superstars/Challenge main events, so it was cool. And looking back, it's more nostalgic to see those "random as heck" matches at Wrestlemanias and Summerslams. I miss them, honestly. It breaks up the uber-seriousness of a PPV (which is ABUNDANT thesr days) at times when they really need it. As I remember, most of the bigger matches had feuds/storylines set up for them and the rest were added as filler. You'd be watching Superstars one week and Mean Gene would pop in the Event Center and just announce that The Barbarian vs Tito Santana had been added to the card. Maybe they would cut promos against each other in subsequent Event Centers but that would pretty much be it until the match. Hell, in the first Summerslam only the Main Event, Tag Team Title Match, and IC Title Match (until Beefcake was "injured") were feuds. The rest was pretty much filler. It almost resembles like what an average RAW is like today.

Alot of the earlier Wrestlemanias had questionable filler matches
WM 6 - Rick Rude vs Jimmy Snuka and Roddy Piper vs Bad News, Rude vs Piper blow off seemed more logical. WM 7 - LOD vs P&G, Demos vs Tenryu/Kitao again why not swap them over? WM 5 - Hercules vs Haku and Dibiase vs Brutus, they could have blown off Dibiase ve Herc here.

The granddaddy of them all: Tito Santana vs. The Executioner opening up the first Wrestlemania. Yes, Buddy Rose was huge (no pun intended) in one particular market prior to this (Pacific Northwest), so having him on the card was understandable. What still makes zero sense is putting him under a mask and treating the whole affair as Santana vs. Generic Masked Jobber #2374.

MVP vs Marty Garner at No Mercy 06. I understand it was MVP's debut and all, but couldnt they have gotten some JTTS so we could have at least had a competitive match for his debut?

I think Lashley faced Simon Dean on some PPV when Lashley first debuted where the loser had to eat a bunch of hamburgers. Seemed an odd match for someone they were trying to build at the time.

Mountie v. Koko at Royal Rumble 1991 seems like a strange one. I get that rumble had matches featuring guys not in the battle royal but at least those matches seemed to make sense like tag teams or six man tags, major grudge matches of title matches. Seems weird having Koko, always on a PPV losing streak versus the newcomer Mountie. It didn't establish Mountie any and the match was cut from the video release. I think it would've made more sense having Mountie gang up on Hogan with Earthquake rather than "Nasty Boy." Koko v. Mountie would've made a WrestleMania match given so many roster guys had matches but doesn't make sense for rumble.
