Well, that was kinda the point. They obviously wanted it to be super awkward for a bit to sell the announcers getting murked by Brock. Yeah but Vince did him no favors with that Rusev line. V: Quick tell them Rusev is coming out to face Cena! B: Here comes Rusev to his title. *Dean Ambrose theme starts* V: *Choking from laughter* B: Oh...its Dean. Sorry. Yeah but Vince did him no favors with that Rusev line. V: Quick tell them Rusev is coming out to face Cena! B: Here comes Rusev to his title. *Dean Ambrose theme starts* V: *Choking from laughter* B: Oh...its Dean. Sorry. That had to be a rib on Saxton, lol. I agree that his tone had to be intentional. Based on the fact that they refused to flip the table back over and how long they took to sell the beating Lesnar put on everyone. Kudos to Cole for taking that bump. That's gotta sting for a guy his size. I wonder if he gets paid extra for that. Cole, Booker and JBL were hyping that Rusev was obviously going to accept the open challenge pretty hard before they got Brocked. Byron was continuing that.

He was so bland, quiet and uninsightful that I could tune him out most of the time, which instantly makes him an improvement on the regular announce team.

I heard him during the Neville match I watched on youtube (I think it was him, at least) and I'd say he's done the best announcing job in WWE for the past 5 years.
He said the bare minimum and let the action speak for itself.
He could have said maybe a little bit more, but I'd imagine he's still getting used to having Vince yelling in his ear to plug 17 different things, put over Reigns and Cena .

He seemed fine the first 30 seconds he had enthusiasm and all that crap...
It feels like Vince got in his ear big time and made him very nervous.

I thought he did pretty well, the show had a unique and funny feel to it for me with the played straight tragedy of the dead announce team. Thumbs up. I was perfectly okay with this, and more entertained by the "now I miss Cole/Booker/JBL" comments since everyone has been crapping on the announce team for eons. Saxton sounded lost and unprepared - which is PERFECT because he wasn't prepared. He could have said more but that would suggest he was ready to do it. Lawler played it somber too because his bestie (Cole) got F-5'd to oblivion. I THINK they were trying to get these guys to deliberately downplay a la the night we almost lost Lawler and Cole had to do it for real. Regardless, Saxton did well for what he was told to do.

He sounded like a guy getting told a lot of different things and was afraid to make a mistake.

This is what it must sound like after they trash the Spanish announce table.
(Except they probably still have a party atmosphere with bikini chicks and balloons for absolutely no reason.)

Renee is fine on commentary. She at least sounds enthusiastic.
I can only conclude that WWE instructed Saxton to sound solemn and downbeat last night as a way of getting over how brutal Brock's destruction of the announce team was. I find hard to believe he'd be that way naturally.

Does anyone think that maybe they didn't tell Saxton he was going to do commentary and that they just randomly spring it on him spur of the moment?

He seemed really subdued and largely quiet but after a bit of weirdness I appreciated it. Everyone on the announce team had just been taken out, Cole had been F-5'd, a cameraman had been F-5'd twice and now they just turned to Saxton and said 'get to it boy!' I think that while it was better once he had someone to work off, it made a lot of sense considering what had just happened and really sold that the announce team had been knocked around pretty badly. Still, we definitely need to avoid solo announcing it seems in the future.

Nothing really stood out about his announcing except for him confusing Stardust with Goldust.
