Not even just in his games, but with how he's used in other games and pretty much what he represents.
Even if you look past how much of an selfish, angsty asshole he is within his own series, Kratos still comes off as such a walking embodiment of the INTENSE 2000's-2010's antihero that it's cringeworthy.
And what I mean with how he's used in other games, it's blatant how much he gets the "Gotta keep Roman strong" treatment from Sony, especially whenever he's a guest character in anything. Granted I don't know how he actually stacked up tier-wise in Mortal Kombat 9, but just like with Triple H in that one SvR game, he was explicitly not allowed to look weak, has to look like a badass even as he's getting burnt to death/chopped to bits, wasn't even allowed to cry during his Babality, and so on and so forth ad nauseum.
Now in Shovel Knight as a guest boss, he gets three full health bars versus every other guest boss (Battletoads don't count since there's three of them), gets incredibly condescending (granted, it's in character for him) dialogue, and again, generally is made to look like more of a badass than everybody else in the game world.
I don't game as much as I used to so I'm not attuned to any of his other guest spots, but I can't imagine them being much different.

He jobs to a shovel. That takes the very concept of burial to a whole new level!
As for his tier in MK9, they generally say he's no good.

Well he is pretty much the bad guy in the God of War series... Yeah, he's an evil protagonist. He's not supposed to be a very likeable guy. His whole thing is that he's a personification of rage and violence.

I think it's hilarious how they retconned the reason for Zeus killing him at the beginning of God of War II to make him less of an asshat.
"Opening Pandora's box made Zeus a paranoid nutcase."
Um no. Kratos was abusing his powers as the God of War, doing exactly what Ares did before him. Zeus was perfectly justified in what he did.

Kratos was abusing his powers as the God of War, doing exactly what Ares did before him. Zeus was perfectly justified in what he did. And yet him and the other Gods keep on screwing him over again and again. Kratos wants to earn forgiveness for the murder of his wife and daughter right? So for ten years under their orders he goes and fights against some of the most dangerous monsters in all of Ancient Greece such as Cyclops, Basilisk, and The Hydra as well as invading armies like The Persians. And may I mention he does this all with constant images of his family's death at his own hands playing in his mind? He even saves not only Greece but The Gods themselves in Chains of Olympus trapping Atlas who nearly destroyed the pillar of the world which would've killed everyone if he had. And yet they still act like dicks to him this whole time and act as if he's a monster. Excuse me, uh Athena didn't you just watch on in amusement as Poseidon raped one of your priestess and in turn made her into a monster without doing a thing to help her despite her pleas while she was raped. As well as throwing a temper tantrum because someone's work was better than your own? And Zeus didn't you have an Eagle tear out and eat Prometheus's Liver every day for years because he gave man fire? As well as the number of woman you had sex with most against their will. And who can forget Artemis turning a man into a stag and having his hounds kill him just because he accidentally stumbled upon her bathing. Frankly the Gods kinda earned his Wrath.

I like Kratos on a very shallow level, he's fun to control from a gamer standpoint and smash up stuff. But as a character I can't take him very seriously, he's every 3DgY 90's anti hero stuffed into one package.
I'd rank him at the dead bottom of the Affable Game Hero scale (Sora is at the top IMO). He's cool as a sprite, but no, he's not likable at all.

He's like Walter White. He's a villain that's fighting against worse villains.

Never played the games but the Let's Plays I've seen online made him look like some kind of asshole edgelord.

Yeah, he's a villain protagonist in the second game. But in the third one and Ascension, Kratos is a lot more redeemable. He got along well with Pandora, he tried to keep her from sacrificing herself, and he sacrificed himself to give humanity hope after he found out Athena screwed him over. From a character development standpoint, he's not "unlikeable" (and boy am I ever sick of that and "likable" being used so heavily).

Kratos doesn't compare to the whiny, hipster chick from Life is Strange. She's the worst at everything.

Very unlikable and the villain of the series.
"THEY STOPPED ME FROM KILLING AN ENTIRE CITY, THEY MUST DIE!"
Plus, just a general irredeemable dick to any character he meets, like Poseidon's lady who he crushed in a wheel to open a gate.
I felt dirty playing the games.

Sometimes, I just really like playing as an unashamed asshole. It's so much more fun than always being the goody two-shoes who is out to right the wrongs of the world. Sometimes it's just cool to be an unstoppable badass who fights for his own selfish reasons.

Man, I really enjoyed the first GOW.
Verrrrry much diminishing returns. And yup, Kratos is an asshat. In the very best and generous light an asshat fighting other asshats, but still an asshat.
Asshat.

Sometimes it's just cool to be an unstoppable badass who fights for his own selfish reasons. Can you elaborate as to why you feel that way? I don't see how playing as Mario or Link or even John Marston or Solid Snake wouldn't be as satisfying as playing with someone so impossible to relate to as Kratos.
