I like him pretty much because he's such an unrepentant asshole. It's rare for a character that's a protagonist to just have almost no real redeeming qualities, yet still be able to have at least some heroic actions.

Sometimes, I just really like playing as an unashamed asshole. It's so much more fun than always being the goody two-shoes who is out to right the wrongs of the world. Sometimes it's just cool to be an unstoppable badass who fights for his own selfish reasons. Can you elaborate as to why you feel that way? I don't see how playing as Mario or Link or even John Marston or Solid Snake wouldn't be as satisfying as playing with someone so impossible to relate to as Kratos. Hey, it's all well and good to be the right and just guy saving the lands at times... but video games are about fun, escaping reality, with no consequences. There are people who absolutely can NOT do an evil playthrough in a video game just because their conscience gets to them. Me? I like to see how dickish I can get. A guy like Kratos is just about pushing forward, no fear, no thought... just forward motion. While he may not be relatable, that's part of the charm for me... because I'm nothing like him. I'm TOO polite, I'm TOO chickenshit, I'm the guy who will get a burnt-ass pizza and still eat it because I don't want them to be mad at me if I send it back..... a guy like Kratos is the polar opposite of me, and there are days where I'm so sick of being so damn polite... I just need to live vicariously through a dude who gives absolutely zero f***s... and regardless of Kratos kills in the game, regardless of the motivation behind it... I go right back to being me afterward. I get out my frustrations, I get out my insecurities and I am able to act a way that is ocmpletely contrary to my actual self with no consequences... in a way, Kratos is a catharsis to me. Plus, I just like a good old fashioned role reversal... it's fun to save the world as Nathan Drake and stand up to the bad guys as John Marston, but... Kratos gives another side of it.

There was plans for him to have a little dog that he had with him and show care for, that reminded him of better times and his last link to humanity. During the game the dog would get bitten and infected and start to transform into a Cerberus and Kratos would have to kill it before it did. They scrapped that deeming it too dark. ...that's the line? All the other terrible shit they had him do and THAT is the line. People tend to be hyper sensitive when it comes to dogs for some reason.

Well, there's Spec Ops: The Line, which ends with(massive spoilers ahead): {Spoiler} The revalation the main character has gone insane after accidentally killing civilians and he has imagined the whole storyline of "rogue general takes over Dubai." So you've spent the last 10 hours killing US Soldiers just doing their jobs, and gotten your whole team killed in the process.

If I want to be the villain I'll play the original Dungeon Keeper and terrorise stupid heroes.
The most enjoyable thing about Kratos is killing him in MK9

I felt bad for Kratos when he unknowingly killed one of his Spartan warriors in God of War II.
Character wise he has no redeeming qualities obviously, he's arrogant, power hungry, war loving, and shows little to no regard for any form of life. I think what fans love about Kratos is that he represents that aspect of power, badass nature, and that through it all he expresses no real remorse. Almost like how fans rooted for Walter White, Frank Underwood, Sephiroth, etc.
They're villains and are very unsympathetic. Yet the power they showcase is intoxicating to where people vicariously live through those characters.
