Remember Josh Server from Nick's old sketch show All That? It always bothered me that he never got anywhere. He was easily the most talented dude on that cast...that seems like faint praise, but it's not. Like Frankie Muniz, Josh quit acting for a while. Although with him, Josh didn't really give a reason for it.

Going back a bit, and without knocking the success they've had in other fields within the business, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill.
Similarly, Viggo Mortensen was outstanding in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. While he's had a lot of success since, I expected him to have more.

It's what happens sometimes when you get so famous for a single role. the majority of people see Mark and immediately think Luke Skywalker. In the same way as Adam West is Batman.

I will say this, that many actors don't necessarily want to be "big". They are happy doing indie movies that are creatively fulfilling while doing the occasional commercial movie which helps them attract funding for the smaller films they prefer.

JTT, he was a huge deal during my childhood and on my bedroom wall. I thought for sure when they released Mark Yeaton it was for him to make a comeback.
Also, I thought James Marsden would go on to do more after X-Men.

I thought Frankie Muniz would be more of star then he turned out to be. And despite his best efforts I feel that Topher Grace is still "the dude from That 70's Show". Topher is just a pretty low key person. I don't think he particularly cares if he's famous or not. Muniz apparently went into music instead.

Clive Owen is definitely one for me. He was in Inside Job, Derailed, Sin City, Children of Men, and Shoot Em Up in short order, and then has pretty much fallen off the face of the Earth as far as I can tell.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Michael Biehn. You would have thought he would be the next big male star after the huge success of Terminator and Aliens but apart from decent roles in future Cameron films and a memorable if bit part role in The Rock he's had a middling/obscure career since then. Which is a shame because he is one of my favourite actors.

Ryan Reynolds - He's done alight for himself but given his good looks and great comic timing he seemed set to join the Hollywood elite but has never quite found the film to get him there.

He may have never become THE guy in Hollywood, but he's carved a good career and is consistently getting work as a lead. Same. Good looking guy whose shown a good range of acting. He's had some good roles, but he never took that step into being a lead.

This probably isn't the target audience but Marsden is crushing the rom-com/Nicholas Sparks world.

Another one who just came to mind is Jason Sudeikis. In 2012, on this very forum, I said Sudeikis had "Will Ferrell potential" and "all the makings of a star." And while he's put together a nice career outside of "Saturday Night Live", with starring roles in "Hall Pass", "We're the Millers", and both "Horrible Bosses" movies, he's nowhere near the level I expected him to be. I thought for sure by now he'd be able to carry a movie to a $75 million box office on his presence in a movie alone. Granted, he's only been off SNL for a few years now, but it took Ferrell about two or three years before he was starring in "Old School", "Elf", and "Anchorman". From a cursory look at Sudeikis' filmography, it doesn't appear that he has anything resembling those sorts of roles on the horizon. Jason has had a sting of hits on par with will and is the most successful movie star from snl since will set the bar.
