I am pretty bored with John and his promos drive me crazy, but man, was he a breath of fresh air on commentary tonight.
He kept the ass clowns focused on the match and storyline, he sounded invested and he didn't try to go all "grr I am CENA" during his speaking.
Honestly, this is a great role for the guy and more so it made commentary the best it has been in ages. So props to the guy.

Nooooo, I think he was incredibly detrimental toward NXT prior to the commercial break and obnoxious on commentary.
I don't ever want to hear him in the booth again.

I wholeheartedly agree, he was a breath of fresh air on commentary. He seems pretty natural to me as a color commentator in all honesty.

I could swear I heard Cena burying Owens and NXT as a whole only to change his tune because JBL put them over but I am also in an inordinate amount of pain so I could be mistaken.

Yeah maybe, but it was still focused on the story, and NXT is their minor league. He kept the story and he kept tone. He wasn't yelling all the time and arguing with the other dolts on commentary. It was so much easier to listen to than the rest of the night/year/decade.

It was so much easier to listen to than the rest of the night/year/decade. But he killed it all, tone or not, he buried the title being defended, the guy that beat him and the brand he represents. This is ignoring that Neville is a former NXT Champ that had Cena beat until Rusev got involved (and chose to try and rescue the title from Owens over getting his rematch with Cena) and whole Sami Zayn stuff that started this feud. That is worse than anything JBL or not Booker have ever done. Owens wasn't good enough but he lost to Owens so what does that make Cena and the US Title? I like Cena but that was some grade A+ shit on a failure pile until JBL jumped in. No excuse for that.

I liked his focus but quite honestly I think he really should sell more that Owens beat him, clean
This "Proving he's a man" shit is ridiculous, HE BEAT YOU CLEAN JOHN, HE DIDNT CHEAT. Just because he says things you disagree with makes him this no good dastardly heel... and that would make sense, if he didn't beat your ass, CLEAN...

This is one of those ugly sides to Cena's character that can't really be defended by saying it's for the kids. He shat all over Owens' career up until two weeks ago with all that bullshit about the minor leagues and how everything he did in his 15 years before coming to WWE didn't matter anymore. Not putting him over as someone who worked his way to be where deserves to be, but who is now among the best of the best and facing a different caliber of wrestler. Nope, just a lot of bullshit about the "minor leagues" and basically burying the guy who pinned him clean until JBL stepped in. Instead of trying to put over his opponent and build toward their match in six days, he chose to talk up how much of a real man he is and shit all over Owens, and it reached a point of bragging that came off as heelish, not in a subtle way of "he's a cocky hero type" but in a "the narrative is overbearingly beating into your mind how noble and good the hero is, and it makes you reject them outright". It was half the reasons John Cena doesn't even have a lot of the traits his defenders claim he does rolled into one neat segment.

He's certainly better than Byron Saxton.

I'm almost 100% sure him burying Nxt is the WWE working smarks.
Nxt is the hip new brand with less flash, and more substance, represented by Kevin Owens.
WWE is the established entity with tons of money backing it, represented by John Cena.
I'm sure the writers know this, and are working you smarks.

It was quite a nice change of pace from his usual throat-shredding yell-fests. I thought the minor league talk was fine, and completely accurate in the WWE narrative.
Cena seemed to put his foot in his mouth quite a bit the last two weeks, I think he's losing again, this time through cheating/interference.

But NXT is part of WWE canon, and NXT talents seem to be presented as higher in the company pecking order than certain WWE main roster talents. Who would interfere on Owens behalf when he's feuding with everyone and their mother?

Also, Smackdown was part of the WWE during the brand s[;it and they treated that show like crap, with Raw commentary constantly putting it down. SO this is a pattern.

But the NXT Superstars generally think that Owens' assholistic behavior makes him a poor representative of NXT and they'd gladly watch Cena put him in his place.

Maybe it goes from Fight Owens, Fight to Kill Owens, Kill with Cena taking a chair beat down? Maybe a Poppa Powerbomb on a chair/through a table? It sets up for a gimmick blow off match that maybe Cena wins but I see it as more Cena/Lesnar Extreme Rules than Cena/Wyatt Last Man Standing.

Except Cena just called them all minor leaguers and doesn't think their experience is worth a damn. Even if they don't like Owens he has stood up for their brand in his way.
