This is an amazing leap forward compared to where we were a week ago, and it's quite cheering to know that that protection is now enshrined by the Supreme Court. I do hope that people won't see this as the end point of LGBT equality, it's one step down a long road, but it's a hell of a step nonetheless. Not to veer too much off topic but there are still people who will argue with a straight face that racism is over because Obama got elected. It's unfortunate, but I won't be surprised when I see this happen.

Do you guys think eventually other countries will legalize it or will it still be banned ?? I'm not into politics so I have no idea how that works out Quick search shows the U.S is the 21st country to do so. I wouldn't be surprised to see it continue to be legalized around the world; Finland is scheduled to legalize it in 2017, with Slovenia and Ireland to do so in the future as well.

I think that I can type this as I'm pretty sure that it's vague enough to not be about religion or politics(and please don't turn this thread into a religious/political debate and get it locked) but to me marriage is really just a piece of paper and there is no reason that any two consenting adults shouldn't be able to acquire said piece of paper. The religious aspect of it is between the couple and whoever or whatever their god is(if there is any) and is really no one's business other than the involved parties. People are too worried about what others are doing instead of living their own lives.

In the last 2 weeks, there has been a lot of sadness and hopelessnes in this country.
Now in 24 hours, one of the escaped convicts from NY is dead and same sex marriage has been upheld. I feel proud to be from this country right now.

I am so surprised I haven't seen a single person make this joke:
"WHOHOO!!! Gar marriage is legal! If you need me, I'm going to celebrate by watching lesbian porn!"

This is something I hope gets teased out in conversation more. The former inability of same-sex couples to be married was unequal and exclusionary (and as such, stupid), but just the same the incorporation of same-sex marriage under the juridical umbrella of marriage and equality in civic terms only re-solidifies the structural inequality between married people and unmarried people in economic terms, thus any sort of societal logic of exclusion hasn't been overturned tout court, it just gathers strength in a different area. And while having the choice, the option of same-sex couples to get married is indeed laudable, does the celebration of this decision also not reinforce marriage as desirable and normative model of social (and legal-economic) co-existence to which everyone, be they straight, gay, lesbian, bi, trans, queer, and so on, should aspire? I know what you mean. And agree for the most part. We live in a marriage-normative society and the ideal scenario is really eliminating marriage from the government's purview so that married/single/poly/etc aren't so unevenly viewed. As an "unmarried" (basically sees the antiquated nature of marriage and believes in long-term relationships)I find living in a marriage-normative society very annoying, but not disruptive to my world to the point where I feel like I'm not considered a full person/citizen. At worst its just people assuming I'm not "serious" about a relationship unless I'm married or trying to sell me on the idea that marriage is "real" while a long term, monogamous relationship isn't "as real as marriage." Unfortunately unhinging marriage from society's will is way too far in the future at this point and creating a level playing field for married people of all types is the best option. Though there are strides being made towards equality for unmarried and married sectors of the population, at this point at least making sure everyone has the right to participate in something is the first step in heading towards making that something less inequitable for those who choose not to participate in it. Hopefully. I think there's an allergy to the idea that you can be supportive of something, like this Supreme Court decision, and be critical of it just the same. That if you're critical of it, you're somehow against it, which comes up as an idea when need to resist as The Guardian posted a column by Chelsea Manning that both supports the Supreme Court decision but reminds people that LGBQT issues are now 'not over' because of this decision either. www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/jun/26/same-sex-marriage-equality-all-lgbt-people-our-movement-chelsea-manningWhat is interesting to me is how the decision concretizes the convergence between homonormativity and homonationalism, especially as expressed within the terms of rights discourse. That same-sex marriage maps neatly onto the already existing discourses and frameworks of social power and control hasn't come up in conversation (hence my point about different understandings and practices of equality and inequality to which you replied). To link this Supreme Court decision to other things going on is exactly what people should be doing. An article posted to Huffington Post a few months ago explains these very things and goes on to elaborate why people need to be critical in moments of hard fought victory and celebration. www.huffingtonpost.com/christiaan-rapcewicz/homonormativity-homonatio_b_6889606.html
