Congratulations to many who can now can get married without scrutinization by their local governments... But in all seriousness, and maybe someone can clarify this for me: When people say that church and state are separate, does this mean that gay couples cannot get married in a church, rather a government office by a justice of the peace? What the above four posts say Got it brother....thank you!

For all the shitty things that seems to be happening in the world, is cool to see that at least we are advancing as society in regards of love Still, I dont understand the US constitution, I always thought that states had their own rules, how could the supreme courtmforce every state to allow gay marriage? The Interstate Commerce Clause gives the federal government jurisdiction in affairs dealing with multiple states. Marriage gives the people who are married rights and privileges, the biggest being tax classifications. Married couples who file jointly are taxed differently than single people. I woke up to the news, couldn't be happier. The majority decision was worded beautifully. This is something I hope gets teased out in conversation more. The former inability of same-sex couples to be married was unequal and exclusionary (and as such, stupid), but just the same the incorporation of same-sex marriage under the juridical umbrella of marriage and equality in civic terms only re-solidifies the structural inequality between married people and unmarried people in economic terms, thus any sort of societal logic of exclusion hasn't been overturned tout court, it just gathers strength in a different area. And while having the choice, the option of same-sex couples to get married is indeed laudable, does the celebration of this decision also not reinforce marriage as desirable and normative model of social (and legal-economic) co-existence to which everyone, be they straight, gay, lesbian, bi, trans, queer, and so on, should aspire?

A big thing I didn't even realize that someone on my feed just pointed out is that this ruling includes citizenship for gay marriage, which previous wasn't guaranteed. It used to be possible for couple who were gay and married to face deportation because it wasn't a federal law.
That's unbelievably huge and I'm surprised that aspect isn't being discussed more.

I had webble-wobbled on this issue up until recent years. Congratulations to any out there whom really had to struggle with this. I live in the South and am Christian, but I'm also pretty much liberal. People need to know that with the religious right that there is also such a thing as the religious left. I'm straight but today has me feeling very patriotic.

I know what you mean. And agree for the most part. We live in a marriage-normative society and the ideal scenario is really eliminating marriage from the government's purview so that married/single/poly/etc aren't so unevenly viewed. As an "unmarried" (basically sees the antiquated nature of marriage and believes in long-term relationships)I find living in a marriage-normative society very annoying, but not disruptive to my world to the point where I feel like I'm not considered a full person/citizen. At worst its just people assuming I'm not "serious" about a relationship unless I'm married or trying to sell me on the idea that marriage is "real" while a long term, monogamous relationship isn't "as real as marriage." Unfortunately unhinging marriage from society's will is way too far in the future at this point and creating a level playing field for married people of all types is the best option. Though there are strides being made towards equality for unmarried and married sectors of the population, at this point at least making sure everyone has the right to participate in something is the first step in heading towards making that something less inequitable for those who choose not to participate in it. Hopefully.

I'm guessing it's similar to the way the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on interracial marriage in the 1960s and it trumped state laws on the issue. Yep, that's the Supremacy Clause. Federal law always trumps state law when the two are in conflict.

Struggled with my stance for a while due to my upbringing, but at the end of the day the simple fact is every citizen deserves to have the same rights.

Part of me wants someone to make a Survivor joke about Merica Isn't that right Waffel113 What a random notification to receive. Over the moon at this news. I've always wondered why anyone would deny someone of marrying somebody they love, and I guess now I don't have to. End of the day, love wins.
