I sort of took it as a given that some people would die because of this hack. I did not take into account the possibility of someone being executed for it (granted, I did not even know that the site could be used for those kinds of hook-ups).

What about people now married who signed up when they were single? I imagine that the hack will also reveal the dates when the transactions occurred.

What about people now married who signed up when they were single? Then they should've deleted their accounts when they got married.

What about people now married who signed up when they were single? Then they should've deleted their accounts when they got married. Not everyone bothers. I'm married, probably on a few dating sites, just figured "I'm not using it, I'll just leave it".

Yeah, in the end there isn't really anybody who comes out of this looking good. I won't think any of us are looking to condone adultery, but I also try to remind myself that I don't know what circumstances some people are living under - gay people who may be in situations where they can't be themselves (whether by law like in some of the countries listed above, or just due to enormous cultural pressure), people in unhealthy relationships who have "no way out" (a more common thing than we'd hope), etc.
Like, I'm sure most users on it were just looking to get their rocks off, but too many people live in unique circumstances that we aren't necessarily in a healthy position to judge. Such a huge privacy invasion is bad enough, but one that sweeps up some of these people along with the majority just looking to have a hook up outside their marriage just makes it worse. So yeah, no heroes here.

The main joke on reddit about this is probably the best I've seen in a long time: Didn't Ashley Madison users get exactly what they signed up for? {Spoiler} Getting screwed by a third party

My wife had an account on a dating site that she completely forgot about until she got a message from some dude about six months after we got married.

Some cyber security experts are coming out saying that a person never even had to visit Ashley Madison, yet their email address could still wind up on there.
Plus, other experts are saying that this has the potential to be a bit bigger: that the type of hacking done here could pretty readily be done with healthcare files, or email inboxes, or other personal files.
The more I read about the group that did the hacking, the creepier they seem.

For some reason, this reminds me of something a guy I know told me about cheating. He explained that it's rational for guys to do it because: "If a man sees Katy Perry walk in, and she wants to f***, his woman's gotta let him, because he's not getting that chance often and she can't fault him for being a man." Heh, who knows, for all I know his data got leaked here. For the average man, if a crack addicted one legged prostitute with no teeth walked in and wanted to have sex, he'd be up for it, so that excuse ain't gonna fly. For the average woman, if a man got out of a Bentley while wearing five Rolexes and said "sup baby", that woman would have sex with him. Oh wait, that's a horrible way of viewing women and a sweeping generalization. Men aren't automatically going to cheat on their wives. That's as hurtful as saying all black men walk out on their children or all Arab men mistreat their wives.

That's as hurtful as saying all black men walk out on their children or all Arab men mistreat their wives. Making a sweep generalization does pretty much undermine one's argument, as you are pretty much stating "Well, I could have come up with something rational to add to the discourse, but instead I opted to veer into logical fallacy and invalidate my opinion/argument." I mean, people have standards. I don't care if the one-legged prostitute is from Crazy Ivan's Cold War Stable of Prostitutes, known for their red hot prices (amputees half off!) I live in an area where there was no real diffusion of crack cocaine, so either I had to go down to California or out to the East Coast, where the stuff was far more prevalent, and searching that hard for the worst bit of strange I could find defeats the whole 'anything that is breathing' angle.

While, yes, hacking into private accounts is totally wrong. I have no sympathy for any of these users. I've been cheated on before. It's soul crushing.

Might as well ask, are we allowed to discuss this list if a politician gets named?
