What did you expect? "Welcome, sonny"? "Make yourself at home"? "Marry my daughter"? You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... morons. LOL, I swear Cleavon Little accidentally broke character when he laughed after that line! He did, the morons line was thrown in by Wilder

I think he was supposed to be the lead, but liked the way Cleavon Little looked and the way he delivered the material, so he said Little should play Bart. Also, Dick Shawn (LSD in The Producers) was supposed to play the Waco Kid, while Gene Wilder would play Headley LaMarr. Wilder kept telling Brooks that he'd be better as Waco and that Headley wasn't really his type of role, but according to Brooks himself, Brooks only changed his mind when they went to shoot Waco's first scene (where he's hanging upside down from the jail cot) and he couldn't get over how well Shawn was playing a drunk with a hangover...until he noticed Shawn actually was already drunk and passed out. They got Shawn to rehab post-haste and recast the two roles. Yeah, Mel Brooks kept complimenting how well Dick was acting (I believe he was even foaming at the mouth) before they cut and realized he wasn't acting. That wasn't Dick Shawn, that was Gig Young who was known for westerns. Young was the original and only choice for Mel Brooks to play the Waco Kid until Young's chronic alcoholism made him a little too perfect for the role.

I would NEVER try that joke in today's world.

This is my favorite moment in the history of cinema. Nothing has ever made me laugh as hard as I did the first time I watched this.

I remember seeing an AMC lifetime tribute to Mel Brooks last. He actually talked about the infamous fart moment in Blazing Saddles. He said that he was a big fan of westerns as a kid, but he couldn't help but notice that virtually all of them had a moment of these cowboys sitting around a fire eating grub in thoughtful silence and he decided "Someone's gotta drop the other shoe..."

"They said you was hung." "And they was right."
"It's all right, Taggart. Just a man and a horse being hung out there."
"Somebody's got to go back and get a shit-load of dimes. "
