So...let's say Vince ISN'T the Higher Power.
Who do you think it could have been/what would you have done?
EDIT: wow, it's really late and I think I just posted in the wrong section. Sorry.

I thought it was gonna be Jake The Snake Roberts. Would've been cooler provided if he was in shape and sober at the time.

Ive never known how true the Jake Roberts rumour was, im pretty sure he was in awful shape and in a bad place by 1999. Storyline wise, he could have played on the 1996 King of the Ring, but really why would The Undertaker dance to the tune of Jake The Snake? It would have been interesting but at the same time pretty weird.

It would have still probably been a pretty shitty storyline.

I don't know if they had anyone who could have lived up to the hype.
Jake the Snake was a few months away from hitting his low point on live PPV. Mankind was about to have knee surgery.
It's what happens when you write an angle without having a conclusion first.

There really wasnt anyone that would have lived up to the hype as already said, unless it was going to be someone from WCW/ECW like Heyman or Bishoff or something. Timing wise Bischoff was about to leave WCW that summer, so a month or so later it could have happened if a deal was worked out.. extremely doubtful but still.

I remember reading somewhere that it was actually intended to be Bret Hart. Vince and Bret had actually started talking again after Owen's tragic passing, and Vince had tried to persuade Bret to come back, but I guess Bret had just lost his enthusiasm for the biz at that point.

I am contractually obliged to mention RSPW posters on Usenet wondering if they faked Owen or Pillman's deaths to set one of them up as the HP.

Bret was under contract with WCW until the end of 2000 and that period was probably the high point of hatred between Bret and Vince so I can't see any truth to that rumor.

I've heard people say it should have been Kevin Sullivan. That would have been cool for long time fans or those familiar with his history in Florida. But I think most WWE fans at the time would have let out a collective "Who?"
It should have been a way to introduce the greatest heel in wrestling history to TV months before if actually happened - New York's own Vince Russo!

In Bret's book he said that after the funeral Vince requested a meeting with him. They sat on a park bench and talked for a bit. At one point Vince told him that he wanted him to come back and he was ready to put the belt on him and make him the top guy again. Bret obviously wasn't ready to move on from Montreal, and Owen's passing had doubtless sucked away so much of his enthusiasm for wrestling. But I guess it shows he was at least willing to talk to Vince. And if he was dissatisfied with WCW, I don't see why he wouldn't at least briefly consider the possibility of jumping ship. But obviously it never happened.

My first guess was Ted DiBiase. Hey, he was the one that brought the Undertaker in!

But still, Ted DiBiase and his money being the Higher Power would have been great
