"On a very shiny and chrome Jimquisition, your old pal Jim Sterling looks at the games most commonly referred to as Walking Simulators. It's a term meant insultingly, and it can be rather unfairly applied. Sometimes, however, the application IS pertinent. Here's how to avoid making sure you earn the dubious distinction." I get the dislike towards them. It's like the developers put all the effort into making the game look good, giving it a story and making it artistic whilst forgetting to turn it into an actual game. Bioshock was the perfect blend between art and video game because they managed to remember the key part of a video game is game.

His problems seem to be that they don't put enough work into making the story or environment interesting.
Or makes you basically come off as a glorified cameraman instead of an actual character.

The only "walking simulator" I can remember playing is Gone Home. And I loved that game. Going around the house uncovering the story was enough to keep my attention. The story was great. And a good story is important to me depending on the game type.
At least you get to freely walk around and explore. It may be minimal gameplay, but it is something if the story is the important thing. Visual novels don't even let you walk around. Its just a visual choose your own adventure book.

There are a lot of ways to interpret gaming, obviously, but one of the few actual examples of forgetting to make it a game I can think of is something like Big Rigs Offroad Racing.
