You'd think that masks and helmets would be featured more heavily, if just for marketing purposes (ie, halloween costumes and the like). I vaguely remember Sam Raimi talking about it for Spider-Man. About how it's generally preferred that when a hero goes through something harrowing, it's a lot better for the camera and the audience to see the character emote..but how you can do that with a character who's generally fully masked. So that's why you get something like: where his mask is conveniently blown apart in a way you can see his eyes and his mouth.

I hated that they gave Ultron lips. It made him look infinitely less intimidating than his traditional look.
It was like watching the horrible GI Joe live action movie where Snake Eyes' mouth and lips were clearly visible under his mask. Ugh.

The movie just felt there. Like everything just felt there except you can feel the burn out in Joss Whedon. K they are reunited for some reason with no clear explanation. Tony Stark in five minutes makes Ultron and made a big whoopsie and he's suddenly evil and off to destroy humanity. Everyone sighs and goes dammit Stark lets fight him I guess. The spectacle is gone from the first Avengers, there is a lack of humor, the characters aren't playing off each other well like in the first Avengers film, like outside of Hawkeye getting a backstory and a bigger role, nothing progresses. Ultron felt like such a filler villain just like that main villain who wasn't Loki in Thor 2. Then Vision is created in a polar opposite 5 minutes oopsie but with good results. Ultron is cleared easily and hardly seemed like a threat who barely caused any real damage or seemed threat and The Avengers B Team is formed. Like there really wasn't many memorable action moments, memorable spectacles, memorable funny moments, epic moments, or anything. Hell there was barely an introduction to Quicksilver and Scarlette Witch and they even seemed to be quickly thrown in without much of a character. Hell that Bruce Banner and Black Widow romance felt so tacked and forced on just because. Captain America Civil War already looks more like an Avengers movie than Avengers Age of Ultron and probably should be retitled Avengers 3 at this point. Plus based on the hype it already seems to be checking off more boxes that Avengers Age of Ultron should of checked off. Like a real sense of danger, progression, characters playing off each other, conflicts between members advancing the storyline, more new and more A-List Super Hero introductions, etc. I don't know whether it was fatigue or "middle movie syndrome" or what, but it actually felt kind of thrown together. It actually reminded me of Amazing Spider-Man 2, and not in a good way. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was a fun movie with an amazing highlight reel, but storywise, it left much to be desired. Honestly, I feel like Age of Ultron was among the weaker Phase 2 films (with The Dark World clearly being the weakest), if only because of how good Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and shockingly Ant-Man all turned out to be. I mean, Winter Soldier and Ant-Man in particular far and away did a better job of showing and not telling with the stakes. Now, while I can't prove it, my suspicion is that Age of Ultron felt so thrown together because RDJ threw his hat in the ring for some more of that Marvel money in the middle of production, so on top of coming back from the first Avengers, summing up the last four Phase 2 films, and building towards Infinity War, Whedon suddenly found himself building towards Civil War at the last minute. That suspicion comes from A) the downright criminal misuse of Baron Strucker that was clearly done because they didn't have room for him in AoU or Cap 3, and B) the fact that Samuel L. Jackson talked about how he was supposed to be in Cap 3 but that never came to be.

Marvel definitely hold the rule that if a mask or helmet isn't critical to the character (like Batman) then the actor's uncovered face gets as much screen time as possible, hence why Tony spends so much time out of his suits (sentry mode, anybody?) or has the close-up of his face inside the helmet, Thor's helmet is strictly ceremonial, Loki's is for when he's trying to look grand and regal, Star-Lord's is just for battle and for use in hostile environments, etc. Hell, we've not even seen Hawkeye wear a mask or helmet. because Hawkeye mask is stupid, his ultimate look is much better I misread that as Hawkeye's "intimate" look instead of "ultimate," and can't un-read it now.
