Just wondering, out of the people here who have guns, do you go to a range or get any proper training in how to use it, or do you leave it at "I know how it works, point and shoot"? Guns are something I'd imagine you'd want the highest possible level of training on how to use. As far as learning how to shoot, growing up in Tennessee I would go in the backyard with my dad and plink with a bb gun and then a .22 and then later, as I got better, go to a friend or relatives house, who lived out in the sticks and shoot bigger and louder caliber of guns. Which is how alot of people on both sides of the family learned how to shoot in Kentucky. As for training, to get a license to carry in TN you have to pass a 8 hour training class with 4 hours in the classroom and 4 hours on the range. And they do recommend that you shoot at least 100 rounds from the gun you plan on carrying/use for defense to make it works, to break it in and, make sure it will work with the ammo that you use. I try to go to the range at least once at month and shoot 50 rounds but, it's easy for me since I live 5 minutes from the range.

Ok cool, not coming from a gun culture, you get the sense that a lot of people don't bother, they just buy one and that's it.

I do when I'm back home (Tennessee). I've received training as part of my class to receive my carry license. I just carry a revolver from time to time when I'm out. I usually carry it concealed in my pocket. My sisters do the same, normally in their purses.
I also own a hunting rifle, a shotgun, an SKS, and an AK-47. I shoot them from time to time--mostly for target practice. I do not actively hunt. Shooting is something my whole family enjoys and it's part of how we bond together. Over the years, I've practiced shooting a whole lot and I'm pretty good at it. I've been around guns my whole life and I've been taught how to respect them.
I think that it's highly unlikely that I'll ever have to use anything for self-defense--the odds are simply against it. The one time I could have done it, I was able to handle a misunderstanding quite easily by talking. I like having the option, though. It takes the police 30+ minutes to respond where I live--if they're not preoccupied. It's not something I can completely rely on if somebody tried to harm me or my family.
Gun ownership is also simply an important part of rural culture and an important form of family bonding. It means a lot when you get a gun that belonged to your grandfather or your great grandfather. Guns have been in our family for generations and nobody's shot anybody.

For me i love going to the range and doing target practice but as far as training goes i have been hunting with my father and grandfather since i was basically 12 and shooting with them before that and literally before every shot they would explain everything to me from safety to where and where not to point all that. And i don't carry any but i do have a gun at home i live in a pretty backward part of Maine and being with another guy around here can cause trouble so i have always been spooked by that and when i was kid someone tried to break into my house while i was alone so thats another reason and the dude didn't stop trying to get in til i pulled out my dads pistol.

In Maine? Really? I remember reading sometime ago that it was a very gay friendly state. But, every state has its good and bad places/people.

I have a lot of feels that come up with this. I lived in West Baltimore for three years. I 'm a woman who for a year of that didn't have a car and worked late nights and had to walk home through a lot of the same neighborhoods that were featured in The Wire and Homicide: Life on the Streets. I didn't carry a gun ever. Two reasons for this- one, I was flat-broke and couldn't afford one (or bullets or training or time at the range), and two, I never grew up in a culture (hunting or otherwise) that would have ever put a gun in my hands growing up. I have, however, been in martial arts for almost twenty years. I carried my house keys in my knuckles instead.
I recently moved back home to rural New York (argh) where I rejoined my first martial arts school and I had an epiphany. I was teaching gun and rape defense to tykes who are growing /grown up in rich neighborhoods with NO CRIME. Seriously- there aren't colleges in my area, whereas Baltimore is the rape and shooting capital of the US. Los Angeles is safer. I realized how ridiculous our self-defense curriculum is, and spent a lot of time now in light of recent events informing students the legality and ramifications of self defense of a gun (how to do it and be on the right side of the law). I'll stop with that there because we'll get into a political discussion.
I will leave with this last thought. I never met anyone who successfully used a gun against an attacker. I knew a girl in Baltimore who got raped despite having a gun in her purse (she couldn't get to it), I knew a mother who got picked up because she had an unregistered pistol in her car, and I knew a guy who thought he heard a burglar and in his anxiety shot himself in the foot. I guess that using a gun for defense really depends on your experiences, but as someone who's lived in one of the most dangerous places in the U.S., someone arguing about needed a gun in a rural area for anything other than deer (and shoot all the deer you want- I hate those things!) just sounds weird.

Southern Maine is very friendly to gay's northern Maine not so much or at least my section not so much.

This has been a fascinating thread to read for me. I'm not a gun person, never shot one nor do I particularly plan on trying it anytime soon. Seeing people explain why they own guns, however, has been enlightening and seeing all the different aspects/uses to it has been cool to read. Particularly the part about guns being part of family tradition and getting handed down a gun.

I used to have a Concealed Handgun License, but I let it expire. I didn't go to the range enough to feel comfortable carrying my gun. But I wholeheartedly support the notion of self defense. I think that once you realize that even if someone calls the police as you're being mugged/assaulted/raped, they're still about 10 minutes away, which is about 9 minutes longer than it takes for something really bad to happen to you, having the means to defend yourself is something that becomes increasingly important. It's not a question of bravado. It's a question of preparedness.

My hand was hurting for awhile after that.

I'm not a gun person, at all, but I'm a white guy living in a rough spot, in Detroit. Had a few attempted muggings and there have been shooting deaths right up the street, from me. Sometimes I think I should get a gun, but I've gotten drunk and depressed and tried to hang myself, a few times. I'm kind of in a bind, on the whole issue.

I feel like I should buy a gun. Right now there's nothing preventing the King of England from waltzing into my home.

Unless a Zombie Apocalypse were to suddenly break out, I feel no reason to own a gun.
I've used a gun once and that was to shoot cans off a fence, other than that never touched one.
Thankfully I've never been in a scenario where I felt carrying one was nessecerry, maybe if I lived in Detroit or Camden NJ. But not here in Kent.

I haven't got my permit yet, took the class but I haven't filed the paperwork. Will be doing so shortly. I want to carry because I've had people try to carjack me(turned one into a speed bump), and heard someone try my doorknob at 1 am. Having a loaded .45 in the house made that not so alarming. I might carry my Sig P220, but that's a full size .45, and it's rather chunky. If I don't like carrying that, I'll probably buy a Glock 30s. My Taurus model 66 is unfortunately out of the question... So how does that Taurus handle and shoot? I've never shot one but, I've read their quality control can be VERY hit and miss. In fact the gun store down the street from my house has quit selling their revolvers because they've had so many problems.
