I don't like talking about this, but my grandpa before he died, last few months or so, he could carry on a conversation to a degree.
He also was asking where my grandma was, why she wasn't in the car, on the drive back from her funeral, when he became despondent and was taken for medical tests right away. They found more than a dozen tumors on his brain, and he could talk and all, but he was just gone and didn't last long after. I think "he can sign a promo pic and said hi, dude must be a Machiavellian mastermind" is really neglecting to take into account how insidious mental decline can be. He doesn't have to be filling a Depends and trying to order a pizza with a hair dryer to be mentally broken down.

Would be neither the first, nor the last time. Everything in psychology is a theory. like evolution and general relativity are theories, yeah Well, yeah. We develop new strands of theory about evolution all the time, and we had a different theory about gravity before Einstein came along. Expert forensic psychologists have got this sort of thing wrong before. Hence, my reference to Ernest Saunders (who was diagnosed by an expert forensic psychologist of showing all the signs of dementia. Saunders made a full recovery.

This isn't a ruling that is used lightly, nor often, with the vast majority of people claiming incompetence probably not getting it, so I can't imagine it was an easy call. That said, I do hope people watch him like a hawk, and if he's faking it, that he gets exposed. He's not been quite all there at the best of times, and with mounting brain injuries, likley, for a guy whose offense consisted of a myriad of headbutts, age, and cancer, I could buy that he's running on autopilot to a significant degree, but I feel sorry for the victim's family, given I do not buy his multiple accounts of the story. Tho this is diff circumstances mob boss Vincent Gigante was able to avoid jail for a long time faking mental illness so it can be done but got to consider mob ties in the justice system back then as well. However, as you said this isn't a ruling that is passed lightly. Many a criminal has tried to play this card and many has failed. One would hope the victims family find some peace as you can't help but feel sorry for them.

It will be I think 8 or 9 years in the fall, a lot of that time is kind of a blur, so I've had time to kind of digest it, but it still sucks.

Huh, I'll be honest I never expected this claim to work for Snuka.
That said, I think the Prosecution basically shot themselves in the foot when their expert psychologist basically testified "LOL, everybody knows wrestling is fake".

Ruling him unfit to stand trial is probably a compromise of sorts. Physically, Snuka has gone downhill rather quickly, and it wouldn't be ridiculous to say that he wouldn't survive the trial process anyway.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't survive until the end of the year.

Expert forensic psychologists have got this sort of thing wrong before. Hence, my reference to Ernest Saunders (who was diagnosed by an expert forensic psychologist of showing all the signs of dementia. Saunders made a full recovery. So let me drop this: www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/theoryNote that the first definition is this: And remind people that there is common parlance view of theory, which is more 'supposition' or 'idea of a thing'. Science tends not to deal in absolutes and lives and dies on the principle of correlation not equating to causation. That it is used a synonym for 'speculation' is an impact of it's greater usage in the vulgate. Science, and the bounty it yields, are not static thing. They shift and change as more evidence appears, or better ways to interpret data are made available. Further other things relating to damage/alteration to the physical structure of the brain would be more a thing for a neurologist or a forensic pathologist to account for. And a diagnosis of "showing all the signs of..." is one of the most useless assertions I can think of.

I read that Snuka referred to the judge as “dear,” “hon” and “sister.” He called his own defense attorney, Robert Kirwin, “brother” and failed to state his full name in his prior hearing but I've been around Snuka enough to see that's just how he talks to people. A new hearing will be held in 6 months to re-evaluate his competency but Snuka's lawyers argued that his condition won't be any better. I guess we'll have to see how this plays out.

I just assumed he used the word "Brudda" at least 15 times in each sentence he spoke and they probably figured he was too far gone

This whole mental competency thing has gotten me curious. Does anyone know when Snuka's last match was?
The most recent match of his I could find on YouTube was just over a year ago. Was this his last match, or did he wrestle after this?

I won't go into much detail because this is an on-going thing in my family, but a mentally ill relative of mine fooled doctors into believing she was mostly fine. She wasn't even trying to trick anyone on purpose. She accomplished this because she simply, wholeheartedly, believed her version of an event that honestly didn't happen the way she said it did. It's possible that Snuka honestly believes he's innocent, whether he actually is or not. It's also, of course, possible that he's lying his butt off. Like I said, I've seen experts be fooled, and an experienced actor looking to avoid jail who also has a history of playing his character in front of authorities is more likely to successful con them than my family member was. The judge basically said that she didn't believe Snuka was smart enough to fool them. Well, if he's guilty, Snuka doesn't have to be a genius here. A little kayfabe and a little playing to the stereotype of an uneducated "rassler" and he's home free.
I feel so bad for the family here. You get a second shot at justice all these years later only to have this happen to you again. That has to be devastating for them.

Mental competency does not necessarily mean you can't do anything for your self, but you can not tell the difference between right and wrong, life or death or the be able to understand the concept of the truth. Picture a 3 year old who shoots somebody with a gun. He might be really smart in some ways(i.e. he might be a great painter, or be able to play an instrument. However might not understand that when somebody dies they are gone forever, or that telling a lie is bad even if an adult wants you to lie.

I presume he finished every sentence with "and The Superfly jumped off the cage". Almost. Oddly enough, it was "...and the Sandman was a surfer".
