This was not a hit job by the NFL. That would make no sense. I don't think the ESPN article really did a hold lot to change the narrative about the Patriots other than to compile all of the accusations of the past in one place. What it did do was make the NFL and Goodell look much, much, much worse. Think about it. Amongst the accusations of how the NFL and Goodell handled things in the worst and most corrupt way are the following: - In 2006 so many complaints were filed regarding the Patriots recording signals that the NFL sent notices to all of the teams but then did not investigate the accusations. - After the warnings were issued, the Green Bay Packers caught the Patriots red-handed recording their signals and kicked the cameraman out. Several other teams accused the Patriots of recording their signals that season as well. Goodell's response was simply to send out another notice about the rules and still did not investigate the situation. - After specifically warning the Patriots not to record their signals in their next game, they caught them red-handed and seized the evidence and sent a copy of it to the NFL to actually force them to do something about it since they refused to investigate in the past. - Goodell's initial response was to send the Patriots a letter telling them to preserve any evidence they were cheating because they will investigate it in the future. Of course, if I were wanting to investigate someone for cheating, the first thing I would like to do is warn them that you will be coming in the future to look at any evidence of said cheating. - Goodell's initial idea of investigating was to call Belichick for 30 minutes on the topic and take him at his word related to the scope of the violations rather than actually investigate it. They then simply announced a punishment and hoped it would die quietly in the wake of the starting season. - Things blew up when the tape in the possession of the Jets found its way into the hands of Jay Glazier, who then ran with the story and it blew up huge. When that happened, the NFL actually came to investigate the cheating and found the evidence that they should have looked for previously had it been a real investigation. The evidence was ordered destroyed, but even then the Patriots would not let the NFL officials leave with the evidence collected, claiming it their intellectual property (remember, the whole point is that the signals are the intellectual property of their opponents) and insisting that it had to be destroyed on site. Of course, they went along with their demands. - When the rumors regarding recording the Rams practice emerged, the NFL instructed then-Rams coach to release a statement to clear the NFL and say they did their due diligence. He did as told, but even that was not good enough so they edited the statement to say things he did not intend to make the NFL and Goodell look better. - An NFL official was asked to sit in the guests coaching booth in order to demonstrate how prevalent scrambling of helmet radios were at Foxboro. The official saw that the radio cut out during some critical plays, but the NFL did nothing to actually investigate the team for that. Now I ask you, is this really something that the NFL is going to leak? I would rather repeatedly punch myself in the face if I were someone with the NFL. Here's the problem: Nobody is talking about the league and how corrupt Goodell is. The only discussion ad nauseum has been about the Patriots and what a bunch of lousy cheats they are. The league is skating because the media lapdog and those who hate New England keep forcing the nareative. Until people (outside New England) start calling the NFL on this, they skate while the Patriots suffer

Goodell's office definitely did not leak it, but I think someone from within the NFL who was upset with Goodell's reign and failure to get the Patriots their "deserved" punishment in their eyes....did do some leakjob to make both sides look terrible. 100 dollars say that it's more probable than not that someone used to work for the Jets. It's been said that you can't be successful without making a few enemies. Aside from the Jets, who do think are the Patriots's enemies on the business side? I'd say that it's the Colts and Eagles.

Other teams do something questionable, no one bats an eye. Patriots do something questionable, everyone loses their minds! As for the Batman comparisons: - Belichick = Batman
- Brady = Robin
- Ernie Adams = Oracle
- Robert Kraft = Commissioner Gordon
- Rex Ryan = The Joker
- Bernard Pollard = Bane

No bet from me. I need the $100 I would lose. Honestly, if the leak isn't a former Jets employee, then it almost certainly is someone who is on good terms with Eric Mangini.

Let's see.....enemies wise, I can name plenty. * Jets * Bills * Dolphins * Ravens * Broncos * Steelers (and they hate Goodell too so that's extra motivation) * Panthers * Eagles * Rams * Seahawks * Giants That's plenty of enemies.

Now if we can just link the New England Patriots to WWE and their various anti-things I like conspiracies, we'll be set. "BILL BELICHICK WAS THE THIRD MAN ALONGSIDE VINCE MCMAHON AND KEVIN DUNN IN WANTING TO BURY DANIEL BRYAN, YOU GUYS" Let's got to personal matters. I never met Mike Vrabel, and I'd have no shot whatsoever with Eve Torres or Trish Stratus, but Vrabel's the reason I'm not having sex with either one, and he's the reason I'm not a billionaire!

*Facepalm* Are you freaking kidding me, Martz? If this saga has taught all of us a lesson it's that you can't kneejerk react to anything. (Admittedly, I've been guilty of it a couple of times during this fiasco)

How many times during this fiasco has ESPN been exposed as having reported unproven hearsay or just straight up lies? Why then is anything they say still being treated as gospel?

As for the perception that the Pats got a slap on the wrist for Spygate, wasn't it the harshest punishment at the time (BB was fined $500K, the highest allowed, and the Pats $250K and a first round pick in 2008; had they not made the playoffs, they would have lost their second and third round picks instead), until it was surpassed by the Bountygate penalties?
Had Goodell suspended Belichick, it would have been for at least 3-4 games.

I think that the Pats don't mind about paying a fine (due to the amount of money they make), but the draft picks are a bigger deal. Ask the Saints after losing their second round picks in the 2012 and 2013 drafts. OTOH, the Pats lost what became the 31st pick (they kept the pick they got from the 49ers), as well as Beichick's tendency to trade down picks, and that the Pats are perennial playoff contenders and get the bottom-20 picks.
