What exactly went wrong with this guy? Every other ex-indy star of his calibre has been given a big initial push and had their debut treated as a big deal (he's not Owens or Joe-level, but I'd put his pre-WWE reputation at least on a par with Crews/Uhaa). He just kind of showed up with the bare minimum of hype, and very quickly ended up on the midcard merry-go-round as far as his wins and losses went. He wasn't booked at all at this week's tapings apart from making up the numbers in the battle royal.
He's yet to have a storyline that lasts beyond one or two episodes, or a Takeover match. Outside of his entrance, the hacker gimmick has vanished and the only direction he seems to get character-wise now is 'act weird,' you can tell even he doesn't know who he's supposed to be. Is he being punished for whining on Twitter when he was waiting for ages to be called up to TV? Or even for the bigotry and chicken incident involving his girlfriend? At this rate I can see him being the next Kassius Ohno, but with even less memorable moments before he gets the boot.

They should let him be all dark and emo like he was when he originally got pretty well known on the indies.

His finisher sucks, for starters.
And a hacking gimmick, more that I think about it, is a non-starter in a pro-wrestling context.

He simply isn't that good.
He isn't any better than a homegrown WWE guy. His claim to fame is weight loss rather than talent.
That and seemingly everyone he associates with turns into public racists.

You would think the hacker gimmick would be highlighted given how hard USA is pushing Mr. Robot.
As for Crowe, he's missed some chunks of time due to injury.

What is the story with him and Ambrose? You kinda get the feeling they aren't as tight as they might have once been.

Yeah, injuries REALLY stalled him out early, and he's never made up the ground. Also, his gear and finisher are ass.

Heel turn could work wonders for him, what with every heel with a fun gimmick getting face pops lately (Breeze, Gable/Jordan, Dillinger).

Compared to all the other guys who have come up from the independent scene onto NXT, the guy just hasn't stood out as anything special. I'll admit there's probably some potential, but he's not living up to it right now. I don't know if he will anytime soon either.

I'm not sure if it's a motivation issue or due to the injuries he's suffered in NXT, but he's definitely missing a step from where he was prior to NXT. Before it, most people tended to consider him the more talented one of the Switchblades. Now though Ambrose has eclipsed him in pretty much every way imaginable and he's actually stumbled backwards in his progress somehow.
I feel it could also be, as someone else alluded to, him not even being sure who he is supposed to be out there right now. There are bits of Sami still in his character, but there's elements of a complete overhaul still and it's been designed to be more suited for a heel & yet he's trying to play a babyface.
I get the feeling it could be an attitude problem too. Though who knows, Rollins had a similar issue when he was down in FCW & NXT and look how he's been handled and how far he's come.
I think the jury's still out on Crowe. I hope he's able to get his groove back and start tearing it up again. It would be nice to at least see him rise to the top of NXT.

These things probably mean more- even beyond people like, say, Kassius Ohno (who was very good, just got out of shape)- Crowe's not even "he simply isn't that good" and more "His indy status means that the NXT Universe just wants Solomon Crowe to be good SO BADLY they decided he is, even though he's basically no better or worse than half the homegrowns who made it to NXT."

Guy's very good and still very young. He just needs to find a gimmick that suits him and a microphone put in front of him.
He's got a heap of untapped potential on NXT. They just need to work out what they want from him.

He's a developmental guy that struck out on his first character. It is a little more high profile given his indie status but nothing unheard of. Given that his latest gimmick involved Zahra (she debuted as his sister on a house show the day shit hit the fan for her) he's had another setback. I doubt he is in any danger of being let go or anything like that, just have to figure out where to go now.
