Kiermaier makes one great leaping catch against the Orioles. Pillar had like 5-10 better highlights this yr Highlight-worthy catches are not entirely indicative of one's defensive abilities. While Kevin Pillar made more SportsCenter Top 10 caliber catches than Kevin Kiermaier, it's without dispute that Kiermaier had a better overall season defensively, whether it's by advanced metrics or the eye test. Depending on who you ask, Kiermaier may have had the best defensive season for a centerfielder in about a decade. Also, and this isn't necessarily the case for Pillar, but sometimes diving, sprawling, leaping catches show a bad defensive centerfielder who is being forced to dive or leap because they misread the ball off the bat or got a bad jump. Again, that's not necessarily the case with Pillar, but sometimes where one player is forced to dive to make up ground, another player is there to make a routine play because he read the ball perfectly. That's why I love watching Jackie Bradley Jr. play defense, because he makes everything look effortless. Sure, he makes his share of diving snags when need be, but he's also always right there in place when the ball is descending back to earth. Already said that I disagree with you and Wilson did too.

Well, at least they gave Josh Donaldson the Silver Slugger for AL Third Basemen. If he didn't win, I was going to ask the MLB voters to take a piss test and then if they passed that, I would ask where they kept the cash they got paid to make that decision.

Rosenthal is reporting that Colby Rasmus has accepted the Astros qualifying offer. Which makes him the first player in MLB history to do so.

Mark Bowman is confirming Andrelton Simmons has been traded to the Angels for Erik Aybar and "others".
f*** you, Braves. Enjoy the attendance of roughly 12-13 people when that new stadium opens.
EDIT: Rosenthal says it's Simmons for Aybar, Ellis, and $3M.
EDIT AGAIN: Sean Newcomb also included in trade.

So glad Simba is gone from the NL East. Dude is a monster with the glove.
Kinda glad I'll be able to watch Newcomb now. He's an America East guy (I went to Binghamton, he's from Hartford.)

Wasn't against trading Simmons, but I don't get the urgency if this was the return.
And at some point it would be nice if the front office would start parlaying some of these chips into a hitter or two.

Someone smarter than me is going to have to tell me what benefit Atlanta gets out of that trade. I'm not seeing it.

Thr Braves are a hot mess. Simmons has so much defensive value that his $/WAR far exceeds his contract, and the fact that he was moved because they didn't like his offense shows how far behind some organization's are.

As a Yankees fan who saw plenty of both Toronto and Tampa this past season, I'm with the GG voters on this one. Pillar had a great year in the outfield no doubt and he deserves recognition for that, but Kiermaier had one of the best defensive seasons I've ever seen from any centerfielder.

My only hope is the Braves are just that much more clever than everybody else that we can't make sense of the master plan yet. With the whiz kids they've hired (e.g. Fangraphs prospect guru) and promoted (the 30-something Coppolella to GM) I'd like to think they're smartening up. But then I see moves like this, and especially the head-scratching Olivera trade at the deadline, and it makes me wonder.

The Padres have traded closer Craig Kimbrel to the Red Sox for four prospects: outfielder Manuel Margot, shortstop Javier Guerra, infielder Carlos Asuaje, and pitcher Logan Allen.
I think it's a slam-dunk for the Red Sox. They get the closer they so desperately needed with Koji Uehara turning 41 next season and coming off of a season-ending arm injury. And while it seems like they gave up a lot in Margot (Boston's 3rd ranked prospect according to MLB.com), Guerra (6th), Asuaje (23rd), and Allen (25th), the risk is worth the reward. If Kansas City and the Yankees have proven anything, it's that a dominant bullpen can largely compensate for the ills of a lesser starting rotation. This is, of course, assuming Boston doesn't acquire starting pitching in the off-season, which is a major leap.
The best prospect in the deal was clearly Margot, who hit .276 in 2015 and is only 21 years old yet playing Double-A. But as great as he could be, the Red Sox have a glut of young outfielders in their system, including Mookie Betts, Rusney Castillo, Jackie Bradley Jr., Andrew Benintendi, and possibly Yoan Moncada. Margot was logjammed and thus was the likeliest candidate for a trade entering the off-season.

Seems like a pretty good return for the Padres, but one the Red Sox could afford.
Glad to see the Hot Stove heating up so early.
