The Herb Dean stand-up in the Weidman/Rockhold fight, IMO, was fine. Neither man could effectively advance their position and wasn't trying to for 10-15 seconds. It was a dead end. The non-stoppage at the end of the third was more questionable. Weidman turtled as soon as Luke got top position. Weidman was trying to defend himself, but it didn't seem like intelligent defense. A ref's always going to be criticized if it isn't 100% certain. Heck, Aldo stiffened up and some people here are saying Big John should have given him a few more seconds. Herb Dean's a good ref and will continue to be a good ref. Man I'm sorry but there are mistakes that will affect your reputation forever. Herb Dean let Chris Weidman receive more than 30 unanswered strikes, to the point where blood was flowing everywhere, Weidman didn't knew where he was. Yeah the ref screwed up there

He's the guy who let Josh Koscheck get stuck in a choke until he was literally foaming at the mouth earlier this year. Munoz went nighty night for A WHILE before he stepped in on the same card I believe.

Aldo looked like he was in the fencing position after the punch. Good stoppage. The Weidman fight, on the other hand, was harder to determine. Weidman still had his arms up over his face protecting enough of the punches that he could be defined as intelligently defending himself. But that's more a judgment call. Herb's been criticized for letting people take too much damage or hardly any. Those sort of TKOs can go either way in opinion.

I'm still a little puzzled by the stand up.

All of this could go tits up with one ref screwing the pooch and causing a fighter to get seriously injured or worse. Know what the hell you're calling because people's lives are literally on the line if you make the wrong decision.

Also I know Jacare is hurt. Seem like he was finally going to get his shot at the title after this fight if only he could get past this fight.

Being in a fetal position with his arms covering his head isn't intelligently defending himself, that's just the human body's basic impulse to stop the punishment. To intelligently defend yourself, you need to show the ref that you're doing more to survive the fight, that you're looking for openings to escape, like trying to secure full guard or trying to sweep your opponent. Weidman wasn't doing that, he was just reacting by instinct.

ESPN are mad as hell about the Weldman fight. Should of been stopped earlier than it did

Some notes from the presser.
Weidman went to the hospital.
Conor either fights Edgar next or moves up to 155, vacates the 145 title and fights the Dos Anjos/Cerrone winner.
Faber says he and Dillishaw are NOT friends and he will fight him, but is okay going after who wins the Dillishaw/Cruz fight in January.
Romero is very happy to be here and will fight anyone.
Tecia Torres maybe, kinda, sorta wants a title shot....or whatever.
Holloway wants McGregor at Croke Park. Good luck with that.
Rockhold is like whatever and taunted Romero about his cardio. Also wants to fight Vitor and get revenge.
Conor hasn't showed up yet due to drug testing. No word if Aldo will be there.

I am really annoyed with fence grabbing since it seems that you get one freebie without punishment aside from a very stern warning. About to be taken down? Grab the fence! Everyone gets one! Yoel Romero reminded me of a heel in an abdominal stretch with how he tried to time his fence grabs when the ref wasn't looking.

Honestly, I've got to give McGregor credit. I figured he'd be the loser after a hard fought battle, get a "face turn" in regards to the fans via showing heart, but instead he walks in and obliterates Aldo in seconds. Insane stuff.
It's amusing how many people magically became Irish after he won though. You wonder if said new found heritage would've popped up if Aldo would have won.

Shame about vacating the belt, but I think that cutting down to 145 affected him. So this means if Aldo gets a future rematch it would have to be at lightweight then.
Rockhold vs Romero sounds awesome, but yeah Romero would lose, he basically quit during the final round against Jacare.

I can't help but feel somewhat sorry for Aldo as getting KOed in 13 seconds in such as a embrassing and shitty way to end such a great title reign.
But its nice have another UFC champion who isn't a yank or Brazilian.

Last night ended the era of dominating champions. Rousey went down last card and Aldo went down this card. Weidman would have really established himself as a dominating champion if he had won last night but even he went down. Who is the pound-for-pound king now?
I don't think McGregor is vacating the title.

McGregor said at the press conference last night that isn't vacating anything. Says he wants to be a double champion and can drop and gain as needed to defend both.
