Did people complain this much when Austin was skinny as hell back in 1997 and looked like a soccer dad?
Serious question.

Man, I wonder how some of you would respond to Dusty Rhodes if he was starting out today. To me if you can go in the ring and not get gassed then you're welcome to look however the hell you want.

Lazy Kevin owens who works the crowd and gets great reactions every time he comes out. That guy should try harder. But those guys that get conway pops but are built better, they've got it down pat. Wait are you posting as Vince? =P Look I don't doubt that, but it irks me that someone so dedicated to his profession doesn't just embrace the gym culture and lose a gut. Its lazy. Theres no good excuse, he's on the road with a bunch of body builders. He could be the total package if he got in shape. Of course, we'd have to also forget that most wrestlers in the history of the business were not 'body' types. The idea of having to be a total package is both a recent invention (in the overall history of the business) but also something that is most synonymous with the Vince McMahon style of running the business (and all the problems of the steroid and drug culture that go along with gym culture in the wrestling business that have marred the business over the past 30 years).

Wrestling as a whole was different back then, so he likely wouldn't even be the same guy he was in that time. If Dusty Rhodes were starting out today, he probably wouldn't have been as big as he was (he probably would've looked like Cody thanks to modern knowledge of food, fitness and medicine). His Belleh was a little bit big, and his hiney was a little bit big, but those things mattered even less back then; the sculpted "pretty boy underwear model" physique didn't become a common occurrence until the mid-2000s or so, thanks to WWE pushing younger and greener talents and the Internet giving wider exposure to indy wrestlers while they're still fairly young and still have a decent body.

That Dusty would never make it to the ring. WWE: "The way you talk is ridiculous, fans will never take you seriously. Here, put on these black trunks and insult the local sports team." Dusty: "But I'm not even a heel." WWE: "DO IT!"

If true, a big part of everything that's been problematic in WWE for a while now.
Guy gets over as a heel, probably would be as well if he turned face. He also gets a reaction from the crowd where ever he goes and has the kind of off-the-cuff mic skills that you can't teach to people in developmental.
But because his "look" isn't right, then that means he can't really be a star.
We've seen this multiple times where WWE bascially leaves a lot of money on the table because they're too worried about being "right" in what they think to be a star to the point they'll use an unreasonable amount of time and energy to make a square peg fit in a round hole, rather than just using common sense and observing what is working/not working.
