I disagree. You don't think, from a match-by-match week-to-week standpoint that 2015 was the strongest year of both Cena and Styles' careers? I think it could be strongly argued that it could be. Both guys for different reasons had a lot to prove, between Cena trying to get over the whole US open idea and AJ being a hot act, but Cena's out and I'm getting increasingly worried both guys might be pushing themselves harder than their body can match up to at this stage. I'd rather be wrong, but it's rough. Right, but given how smart the psychology of both men's matches were in 2015, I'm pretty confident that even if their bodies aren't as capable in 2016, their abilities as performers are beyond finely tuned to work around that.

I think the comparison is good and I would probably enjoy the match especially if it's built up right.
Also the way some of you guys shot this idea down was kind of rude in my book.

Styles wasn't even the top guy in New Japan. A better argument would be for Tanahashi as he has approximately the same length of time as the figurehead of the company.

I doubt the OP meant on the same level. That's just common sense. #1 guy in one company, standard bearer for years in another. The Standard Bearer comes to the company of the #1 guy. Yes, it's very similar. Good call, I'd never thought of it like that. I think the comparison is good and I would probably enjoy the match especially if it's built up right. Also the way some of you guys shot this idea down was kind of rude in my book. completely agree with that last line.

It's the closest comparison we've had in quite awhile. Of course it's not the same level but I think it's a good thought personally. Especially the year the two just came off of. Granted Cena is out with injury but we know once he sun dips he'll be back to Superman levels in no time.

If we are going with past comparisons, I'd compare it more to Kerry Von Erich sharing a show with Hogan. Hogan was the national star while Kerry was the face of the alternative with firm southern roots. Hogan was already about a decade on top and being moved out of the main stage too by the time Kerry showed up.

This thread started with a whole lot of unnecessary negativity not unlike a downvotingfest on reddit, but the truth is that you're not wrong. In regards to American wrestlers that are considered to be the best, or at least the biggest draws, it is a lot like Hogan and Flair. In terms of the match they can bring, I don't think they're on the same level, but they can certainly bring a good bit of fan service to the table, and bring a "super-fight" feel.
Yes, there are far better wrestlers, or wrestlers that you could consider to be more like Hogan and Flair were. But in terms of that big match feel, I agree with you man.

Well Hogan and Styles are both bigoted pieces of shit, but I don't think Cena has had enough divorces, debts, or drunken encounters yet to equal Flair.

Essentially. Yeah wrestling is not as "big" as it was during the days of Flair and Hogan but that era was so much more contained to North America and a handful of other countries. WWE's increasing world-wide expansion brings with it discussion and exploration of the genre, which inevitably results in hearing the name AJ Styles at least once. More people are easily aware of AJ Styles now than folk were of Flair before his debut.

Styles and the New Japan guys are much closer to The Radicalz jumping ship than Flair. It's a "Wow, awesome!" thing rather than "Holy Jesus Butt, what's going on in the wrestling world I know and love?!?!".

if you're going by best draw vs best wrestler (in the world), you're right even though the business is about 10% of what it was back in the glory days.
i hope both guys get along well because their match could be MOTYC easy.

Then he got in the ring and kicked ass, so I changed my mind.

For me Shinsuke Nakamura VS John Cena fits the bill of THAT match you never thought you'd see it. It would be good too, I'm sure Cena would put over Swagsuke's theatrics.
You know, Styles or Nakamura, Paul Heyman could play the Bobby Heenan role and do the whole "Let's see what happens, when for the first time ever, John Cena goes against... (insert name here)" promo.
But, Cena has shown his mortality, it's not like he's perceived to be invincible anymore.

I'm going to say no, but it is an interesting question. With Flair/Hogan we had a solid five years of speculation on the covers of Apter mags and large groups of supporters on each side.
