People are overreacting. The OP isn't saying Cena and Styles are on the same level as Hogan and Flair. He's speaking on the basis that both guys have been the top stars of their respective companies and have yet to face each other. In that regard, it's possible. I'm just not sure who's been the top guy from TNA or the indys, but Styles is a candidate Yeah, that's also what I understood the post as. Not that the attention it would garner would be the same, but they were both "the" guys of their respective promotions for the current generation. And the people who are saying it should be Cena/Japanese guy are missing the point. Hogan/Flair were the faces of the two biggest north american promotions. The op didn't say what's the modern Hogan/Inoki or Hogan/Baba. They even tried to turn AJ into the new Flair. It's only ridiculous to compare because of how fall TNA has fallen. That said, I'd say Cena vs Bryan was the modern Hogan/Flair since Bryan had more popularity and prestige on the world circuit but AJ's not far off.

Yeah. It's nowhere near on the same level but it's still the closest modern day equivalent.

By what measure was pre-WWE Daniel Bryan even close to being as popular as AJ Styles? 1.5 million people (plus whatever Impact was doing internationally) weren't seeing Bryan on their TV every week.

Not on the same level but probably the closest we'll get to it. Yeah, this, probably. TNA, ROH, and NJPW are nowhere close to that level NWA/WCW was in the 80s, at least in the eyes of North American fans. Fans in New York had at least heard of Ric Flair, and knew his credentials. For the majority of the modern WWE fanbase, I can't say the same for AJ, sadly, even if he deserves that sort of notoriety.

This where the ratings debates come in. ROH didn't have the same viewing figures but Bryan seemed to have more online buzz.

This where the ratings debates come in. ROH didn't have the same viewing figures but Bryan seemed to have more online buzz. ROH had a lot of buzz back then within a very small bubble of wrestling fans. General wrestling discussions online were dominated by TNA and especially WWE back then. ROH then was basically what NJPW is now in the English speaking world.

but surely its the biggest match you can make for a WWE guy vs non WWE guy in the current era of wrestling. Not really Tanahashi vs Cena would be bigger. The number one guy in NJPW vs The number one guy in WWE.

I'd like to see it but I doubt the majority of the WWE Universe knows who AJ Styles is. Debut him in Mudlick, Kentucky and everybody would be like Hey buddy, I know Mudlick, Kentucky. People do not look like that in Mudlick, Kentucky.

The number one guy in NJPW vs The number one guy in WWE. Not in the slightest. Only in Japan would that be bigger. The majority of wrestling fans have no clue who Tanahashi even is.

Unfortunately there is no modern day Hogan vs Flair and we can all essentially blame Dixie Carter for that.

It'll be a good match and should happen but not even close in terms of significance
