Del Rio's Tree Of Woe has to go.

This is a contender for one of the worst finishers ever.

The move itself can look brutal if in the right moment, but forcing it into every match just makes every match he's in look so obviously choreographed, the opponent is knocked out, draped upside down, but then has to do a sit up and hold on to the ropes to take it.

It is literally "please just hit me and beat me" - the move.

Another problem is that it was an occasional move in Del Rio's first run, and he didn't win with it, what makes it that much more powerful now?

The cross armbar was at least over, even if he milked it dry with his aggression, even his super kick is legit enough to end a match, it even ended Cena!

Well he had started using the double stomp at the beginning of 2014 as a finisher, and yes he makes it look brutal (I swear, it looked like he caved in Neville's face a few months ago) but it is so contrived it's ridiculous.

What was wrong with the cross armbreaker anyhow? If anything I found it quite charming as part of his AGGRESSIVE moveset.

The set up, on the other hand? Makes the guy taking it look like the stupidest person in wrestling. "Sure, let me assert my own energy by holding myself up in perfect position for you to hit your finisher. I know if I let go, I'm clear. But nah. I'll keep holding on for you, Mr Del Rio."

I think this board even had a "What should Del Rios finisher be" thread at one point years ago.

For the record, last night was one of the first Del Rio matches I've seen in a while and I thought that move looked great, contrived or not.

it is no more contrived then the 619. Many Wrestling moves make no sense and couldn't possibly work in a real fight. Zigglers grab someone's head in midair with zero leverage and somehow DDT them is a great example of this.

Even if it is equally as contrived as the 619 it is a problem.

He actually used it once as his finish:



He was still primarily using the Cross Armbreaker and occasionally the sliding super kick, but it's not a new finish. As for why he's using it now over the superkick that took out Cena, just chalk it up to pro wrestling logic.

I blocked a lot of those moments out because their feud made me sad, but I feel like Ricardo took the move better a few years ago than some of the guys currently.

I'd say a mix of two things -

1. He could never beat any faces that actually mattered with it.

2. They're dumb enough to think that's the reason no one cared about him and the whole, "Aggression!" joke came to be.

The 619 while contrived is nowhere near as fake looking as Del Rio's stomp. At least with 619 Mysterio would at least knock the opponent into the rope with a dropkick or a drop toe hold, yeah phony that they would somehow always fall onto the rope but at least I could at least somewhat buy that the opponent is stunned enough that he can't move out of the way. With Del Rio's corner stomp the opponent actually has to lift himself up so he can get stomped. It's the most ridiculous move I've ever seen. Ziggler's I don't really see as that contrived at least compared to move moves, as it's just him jumping on the guy and then shifting his weight downward to drop the guy on the head.

Rey's finish was a little bit Looney Tunes, but the opponent didn't purposely drape themselves on to the ropes, he had to dropkick their butt or hurricanrana them into that spot, then they would be limp, not holding on to the rope with all their strength, it was reversed pretty often too.

With Del Rio's finish, it isn't about rolling out of the ring or grabbing Rey's left knee, all you have to do is not sit up and he will probably miss you and just do his devastating diving nothing drop he did to Randy Orton that time.

Meh, it's easy enough to explain. You've got the blood rushing to your head, and you've got no chance in the rest of the match if you stay in that position too long, so your only hope is to try and escape, with the risk/downside that it also makes you vulnerable to attack.

At the very least, if he really wants to do the move, why doesn't Del Rio grab his opponent's arm himself? That way it won't be this stupid thing where his opponent needs to do a sit up and hold onto the rope, waiting for him to hit the move. Grab their arm, so that Del Rio is the one holding up his opponent.

This "619 was unbelievable and contrived" thing is probably the one single thing people say around here that baffles me the most.

He dropkicked or drop toe-holded them into the position, usually. What. the hell. is the problem.
