We're mere days away from the first racing action of the 2016 NASCAR season with the Unlimited exhibition race at Daytona, so it's time for a new thread.
All other motorsports are welcome as well, past present or future, from Formula 1 to IndyCar to MotoGP to BTCC to motocross... whatever floats your boat (hell, even powerboats if you're so inclined). Just never forget the umlaut.

I know he's a fan and been to quite a few races but this was still odd to me until I remembered he has that military game show (American Way, I think it is) debuting in I think April on Fox. He'll probably be all over Fox in the coming weeks because of that, just another reason I am not writing him off for Mania.

I'm not sure how I feel about NASCAR finally dropping the field count from 43 to 40. On one hand, it makes sense and it seems less of an arbitrary number in a lot of ways, but on the other hand, 43 cars felt unique to NASCAR and the huge fields was something special you don't really see outside of sports car racing. On the other other hand, I have to remind myself it wasn't 43 cars across the board until 1998-1999ish, and that even the first few years I was watching, the smaller tracks like Martinsville and Bristol would have like 36! cars racing.
That, and the "everything must be TRADITIONAL!" mindset is the same thing that has commentators on Racer STILL bitching about airboxes on Indycars.

The ARCA race at Daytona just started and they made a total of 3 laps before having a 10 car wreck.

I don't mind the drop to 40, wish they would cut it down to 36-38. Lets face is, those in the back are usually start and parks anyways.

Chase Elliot takes the pole for the Daytona 500. Matt Kenseth joins him on the front row.

And all the conspiracy nuts on twitter are coming out. Forgetting the fact the 24 was fast on all Plate races last year.

It's been four years of the biggest storyline of the race getting the pole: Danica- first female Dillon- Return of the number 3 to NASCAR Jeff- Jeff's last season Chase- Chase's first race in Jeff's old car. What would have been interesting is who would have got priority if Tony hadn't been injured.

Yeah, I like Chase Elliott and he's my non-bandwagon new top driver, buuuuuut it's getting a bit ridiculous with the Daytona poles.
I didn't realize how blatant it was until it was pointed out just now.
At the same time, though, I'm really not sure how one would go about fixing 43-ish cars like that. It'd be one thing if it was group qualifying, but single-car runs, the only way I could see that you could fix it would be to enhance the 24 car versus telling everyone else to Let the Wookie Win.

What I find really annoying is people already jumping down NASCAR's throats for "nearly killing someone" already, when in closed-cockpit racing (and to a lesser extent open-wheel) that kind of a tumbling crash is honestly about as safe as you can get as long as no one hits him because of all the energy dissipation.
What I do agree with though is that it seems like all the races at Daytona and Talladega are increasingly ending the exact same way. "Smaller" wreck at around 5-10 laps to go, restart, ginormous crash on the last lap. In the truck series I would chalk that up to the trucks being much more of a true feeder series in terms of experience levels than it was, say, 10-15 years ago (which I think was the peak of the trucks' "retirement tour" phase), but not so much for Cup or Xfinity.
It's certainly not the nature of restrictor plate racing as I seem to recall drivers being able to finish a race without wrecking pretty easily before like, 2010 or so.

Watching the Xfinity I am just going to say how cool it is to see Bobby Labonte in a JGR Car again.

Glad the Xfinity race was surprisingly clean. Good job by Chase Elliott, especially since it seemed that Joey Logano was just about ready to wreck him at the end of the last lap.
