Colin Delaney's underdog role in WWECW was originally written for Pittsburgh indie mainstay John McChesney. The reason he was cut, according to both guys, was due to Michael Hayes' inability to commit to the story. He killed it Monday night, only to bring it back the next morning. McChesney, however, wasn't in Rochester with the rest of the crew. He was still in Buffalo, the site of the previous night's Raw. Hayes was angry, claiming that his "unexplained" absence was going to ruin the show. Delaney, who happened to be backstage, quickly called McChesney to inform him of the change. By the time he had arrived (an hour and a half later), the spot had been given away. He also go berated by Hayes for being "unprofessional." Delaney has also said he was Hayes' absolute last choice despite already being backstage. Everyone else the booking staff tried (including Jimmy Olsen and Brodie Lee) was at work and couldn't make it. He was the only person with the day off. Off topic, but this reminds me of how Ricardo Rodriguez got hired. The idea for Del Rio to have his own announcer was dead last minute, so they put out a call to the indies in the area(Los Angeles) for any worker who was fluent in Spanish and could be there that day. Three guys showed up. One didn't own a suit, the second wanted to be known as a wrestler and not a ring announcer, and Ricardo basically said "You're gonna pay me just to announce this guy in Spanish? Sign me up!!!" I think the original idea was to use a different announcer in each city, but the logistics of that plus Ricardo's attitude led to him getting a contract.

I heard Dolph Zigglers "I'm Perfection" theme was meant for Curtis Axel/Joe Hennig.

The Black Scorpion - It was supposed to be Warrior, but they started the angle before they'd even gotten a response from the first feeler they sent out, and by the time they gave up trying to negotiate, the angle had gone on for-goddamn-ever Wasn't Warrior WWF Champion?

Not sure if this qualifies, but during his run as Berlyn Alex Wright tried to pitch the idea of him winning the US title and renaming it the German title. But Berlyn flopped and a few years later his idea got used for Lance Storm.

Not a gimmick as such but I have read that the nickname 'The Heartbreak Kid' was originally intended for Shane Douglas during his 1990/91 WWF run. The plan was for him to be a sort of teen heartthrob type and play off his boyish good looks. He left before the plan could take place and the nickname was recycled for Shawn Michaels. I've always heard the nickname credited to coming from Mr Perfect and he was still active and not on commentary when Douglas was around.
