anyway, Bruce Campbell always puts on a good performance, even in a crap movie. Have to agree there. Bruce Campbell can un-crap at least his part of a movie like no one's business. I'm kinda partial to Denzel Washington. He's one of those "improves things just by showing up" actors to me. Agreed Denzel is terrific. How has Tom Hanks not been mentioned yet? He's my vote

Oh, golly gee, I'd like to die for slightly forgetting Bruce Campbell.
And I'd also add, Cary Elwes and Sam Elliot.

Johnny Depp, as somebody has already mentioned.
For me, some others are Tom Hanks and Robin Williams.

I read all of these and, while good answers, have all had their share of faults over the years... but I present you the one man who's mere presence in a movie can automatically up it's respectability rate... Morgan f***in Freeman The man makes everything from action movies (Unleashed) to historical dramas (Amistad) to crime thrillers (Along Came A Spider) to creepy thrillers (Se7en) to comic book movies (Batman Begins) to comedies (Bruce Almighty) just that much better... Thus, end of thread...

Agreed...hard to think of anything he's done where he isn't superb. Also I'll add Steve Bucsemi and Tim Roth. While both have been in terrible films (Hooligan...WTF is that?) they've made the best of their roles by stealing the spotlight

If that wasn't him, then Steve Buscemi has a nigh-perfect clone.

3 pages and no mention of Gene Hackman. He has been in some real crap (Superman 4???) but is always brilliant in those films. And now he's retired Hollywood is a lesser place without him.

After seeing The Departed, I've got two: Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg. Leo out Bostonian-ed Damon and Wahlberg (and there have been more bad Boston accents on screen than actual people in Boston) , and Wahlberg hasn't turned in a bad performance in a long time.

You're welcome. And for my money, he was the best thing about The Departed.

you guys suck, No Robert Duvall? No Robert Deniro? No Jimmy Stewart? No Humphrey Bogart? No James Cagney? With the exception of Tom Hanks, none of what you guys mentions can hold a candle to the people I have mentioned. get to watching some real movies
