It's been an interesting quarter century for the blue blur. Full of dizzying highs, terrifying lows and creamy middles. The excellent 16-bit era, the take it or leave it dreamcast/Gamecube era and the rough latter era of recent times. Despite that Sonic remains an icon of gaming with at least one good cartoon out of the five made and every now and then a good game still comes around. If you got any great memories of the character, they're worth posting here. For me, I got into Sonic through the Archie comics and Sonic SatAM which fueled my choice to get a Genesis.

I barely remember Sonic 3. but for some reason its save file screen is burned into my memory.
A few years back I bought a classics collection which had Sonic 1 and 2. They are still great fun to play and have held up really well.

My first exposure was through my sister's Game Gear. After that I played 1, 2, and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on my Genesis.
And...that's it actually...

Obviously, he's had a rocky ride, but I would say the good has largely outweighed the bad.
The funny thing is, I have no great affinity for the Adventure games, and yet I do still sometimes get City Escape or Live and Learn stuck in my head, in addition to the more classic themes.
An underrated, in my opinion, theme from the older games would be Aquatic Ruin Zone. I'm also partial to Flying Battery Zone. Both just kind of seem grand to me, lending a sense of scale to the levels they're in, from some ruins of a long-since forgotten past that Eggman's ego couldn't leave unscathed, to this armada in the skies.

My parents purchased a Mega Drive with Columns, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle and Sonic 1. Got Sonic 2 that christmas. Rented Sonic 3 but never really stuck with me for whatever reason, though I did like Sonic & Knuckles. Jumped off Segas dick and onto Nintendo's dick for a few years. Got a PS2 and played Sonic Heroes. Never really played a Sonic game since.

Sonic The Hedgehog was my first video game on my first console at five years old.

A strange strange franchise
IMO Sonic games from STH to Sonic adventure 2 were great (Sonic R aside).
After that is when it went to shit (console wise) because they kept adding new gimmicks to the series
And when they found a good spot (Colors/Generations) instead of carrying on with that they'd just make another Gimmick game.

I remember playing Sonic 1 at my cousins house before my family got our own Genesis. Also remember getting Sonic Advance because it was an original Sonic game for a Nintendo system, which felt weird at the time. And I may as well post it here. Humble is doing both a game bundle and a comic bundle for Sonic for the next 2 weeks. www.humblebundle.comIf your computer can run them, $10 for Racing Transformed and Generations is a steal.

His Archie comic series is arguably at a peak level of quality now, not just in terms of blending the Sega and SatAm mythologies together but finding a good balance between drama and being a fun comic about talking animals.
Not to say the ABC show still doesn't hold up, it does. Plus it gave us Sally.
My favorite games in the series are probably 3+Knuckles and Colors, but I'm also one of those Adventure 2 defenders that game reviewers told you scary campfire stories about. The hedgehog levels control far better than the first Dreamcast game, and it's fun to just blast crap with Tails and Eggman's walkers. Plus the Chao are so cute.

My buddy was the one with a Genesis in so I only played Sonic 2 + 3 and knuckles when I hung out with him it was fun.
Though my first handheld system was a Game Gear and it's 5 minutes of play time, with Sonic 2 (which was a completely different game)
it is a bit of a shame how far a gaming icon like Sonic has fallen where his games pretty much become a punchline...
the fact that Sega refuses to actually build on the good games or even the ones that are just OK and instead just flat out starting from scratch doesn't help.

Even more so than the game quality, I think Sonic fans are unfairly bullied by other game fans much of the time, usually for stupid reasons.

I played Sonic Adventure as a kid and it instantly became my favorite game and is still up there for me. I haven't played too many recently but I remember playing Shadow's game and actually enjoying it mainly because of the replay value. I didn't mind the guns and found the gameplay to be good enough to be worth playing.

Sonic 1 and 2 remain probably the greatest platformers of all time, with S3&K and Sonic CD in the upper echelons as well.
While other installments have been a bit more rocky, there's been some damn fine stuff mixed in. Generations, Colours, Advance 1, Adventure 1, Heroes, all games I'd class as somewhere between good and great. And while the series has had its doldrums thanks to things like short development times (Boom, 06) misjudged gimmicks (Labyrinth, Shadow) or Nintendo (Boom, Secret Rings, Black Knight), there's usually at least something to enjoy in them, whether it's aesthetics, music - and talk about a series that has more memorable bits of music than any other gaming franchise ever made - or even having a giggle at the voice acting.
That said, I do hope that Sega will buckle down and make the next 25 years have more to enjoy about them, rather than just spending money on gits like Aaron Webber to recycle 4Chan content on Twitter while the franchise slowly dwindles, and it's truly kind of sad to think it's been a full five years since the last genuinely great Sonic game. That's a full fifth of the series' lifespan.

It's been sad to see Sonic's nosedive since the Dreamcast days. I've always been more of a Nintendo fan especially in the 16-bit days, but Sonic 2, 3&K, and Sonic CD were all pretty good games.

I'll be playing Mega Collection on GameCube in honour of the blue blur tonight.
He's had some.. less than stellar games for sure, but when they're good, my god, are they good.

I don't dislike Amy at all, but chemistry wise SonSal is the one pairing that makes the most sense.
