So, yeah, one of the local used game stores in the area (Just Press Play, Lancaster PA) called up all their employees and sent them all out to buy up every bit of stock possible, and instantly put a bunch of them on Amazon for $330 as soon as stock sold out (in 10 seconds!!!) on the 11th. I sort of wanted to call them out on it, but I think instead, I'm just not going to frequent them for a while. Shitty as it is for the customer, it's just how the game is played in retail on limited stock items. I remember Kevin Smith talking about how one of the things he used to do to keep Jason Mewes occupied when he was going through withdrawals from his drug addiction was take him action figure hunting. They'd get up at 5am, wait for places like Toys 'R' Us, Suncoast, etc. for limited edition action figures, buy them for retail price (which was cheaper than buying them wholesale due to the ratio of valuable to junk figures per shipment) and sell them marked up at the Secret Stash, all the while racing to beat the other comic book store owners who were doing the same thing.

Oh, I'm not saying that they weren't within their rights to do so (they definitely were), just that, as a consumer, I'm choosing not to frequent them for a while as a result.

I'm totally with you on that. Small retailers are welcome to do what they can to maximise profits, doesn't mean I'm going to be the one to get suckered into paying over the odds for something. I'm definitely tempted to get a NES Classic, but I'll wait until demand isn't anywhere near as high.

I see it differently personally. I fully expect comics stores to buy things like action figures and sell them AT their store for what it's worth. I also expect used video game stores to buy games and systems at low price and sell them for a profit. What's f***ed up is assholes like this sending out their employees to buy up as much stock as possible...when it was probably one per customer...and immediately price gouge online to make a $270 profit. If there's any justice then no one will buy a single one from them...and I wish that's something that would happen every Christmas when this goes down.

It's certainly a shitty practice from the point of view of the guy lining up outside the store half the night only to come up empty handed, but to play devil's advocate, between competition from bigger retailers and game publishers actively trying to squeeze the life out of the secondary market, small retailers would be fools to not do everything they can to get their hands on as much stock as they can and sell it whatever way will garner the best returns on their investment when there's a high-demand/low-supply product.

There is an issue of the Clerks comic book where Dante and Randal try and get into the action figure speculation market in the wake of the Star Wars rerelease and watching Walt and Steve-Dave do this. Only for the market to collapse when Jay and Silent Bob flood the market. This issue can be found in the "Tales from The Clerks" anthology.

On a scale of 1 to TAS.

We got 3 in our store last night, I should have grabbed it and flipped it on ebay for a big profit, but I just told a few other coworkers and they bought them up for their kids.

Man. Walmart is selling this online for $500. Geez. For $500, you could practically own an original NES and all the games if comes with.

I asked for one of these for Christmas, but I have no hope I'll get one.
Gotta love Nintendo and their false demand!
