Despite my earlier jokes I really dislike the Overrated tag it generally has a "Stop liking what I don't like" air to it. Underrated I'm ok with in the context of "I feel like x is under rated" as opposed to making it sound like my opinion is the only right one you unsophisticated clods

I'd say GTA4 as it got loads of perfect reviews and reactions calling it one of the greatest games ever when it was first released but doesn't seem to be held in such high esteem by either gamers or the media these days.
It doesn't even fall into a "it hasn't aged well" or "you had to be there at the time" category that may be applied to something like Goldeneye. Nor does it have the ultra loyal fans a more niche title may have.
Although of course videogame review scores do tend to fall at the extremes of the scale where 7/10 is seen as a bad score so I guess you could say the same about all sorts of titles.

Yeah, it's not aged well, especially when GTA V improved on it in every aspect gameplay wise. Still see people clamouring for the slidey driving physics and clunky gunplay though. I disagree with the people saying Uncharted though. I love the series, although I will say the first game is utter crap. I got the second game when I got my PS3, because it was cheaper than the first for some reason and later got the third, completed them both, and only got the first game last year. And it's so f***ing bad. It's so damn clunky, and the difficulty curve is like a f***ing right angle. I go from facing schmucks with pistols to large armies of assault rifle wielding enemies with sniper support and the occasional insta-kill grenade launcher thrown in seemingly between loading screens.

Assassins creed Bioshock series Infamous series
I've never really liked
Sonic adventure 1 only has like 3 or 4 good levels
Portal. Fantastic puzzle game (which I suck at) but i seen it rated as the number 1 PC game of all time on gamesrader.com and they keep praising the story like its the first video game to have one
Mario galaxy series. Mario shouldn't have a f***ing double jump dammit and the walk all the way around planets gimmick annoys me. Feels like I'm having to crane my neck to see Mario
GTA 4. Sucked all the fun out the GTA series. Boring grey world and clunky controls.
I'm just venting at this point but that's pretty much the point of these kinda threads

Someone on page one said Metroid was over rated. Maybe, but at the time it did it for me. Justin Bailey is more than a code...it's still real to me damn it!

I'm not sure where to classify Super Mario Sunshine.
It's underrated in terms of a Mario game, but overrated in terms of a platformer(since people want to make the bold claim that it was the best platformer on the GameCube or even of that generation).
It's quite the conundrum, really.

Someone on page one said Metroid was over rated. Maybe, but at the time it did it for me. Justin Bailey is more than a code...it's still real to me damn it! The original Metroid is very much a product of its time. But the Zero Mission remake showed how great the basic game is with some modern window dressing and quality of life improvements like an in-game map and background graphics. Now if anyone says Super Metroid, we will have words.

. But the games from last generation that left a lasting impression on me weren't the Uncharted games; they were the titles like Mass Effect and Skyrim. Those are games that didn't perform quite as well on reviews They all did equally as well on reviews. Mass Effect are pretty much all 4.5-5 star ratings. Skyrim... 4.5-5 depending on the version. Uncharted 4.5 - 5 star ratings. It's not like Mass Effect was getting 3's, Even Mass Effect 3 with it's massive problem that I won't get into has an average review of like a 4.5 Via the critical aggregate (not the fan review) aggregate on Metacritic, the Uncharted series edges out the ME series, though I'll give you Skyrim. I had no idea it fared as well as it did; maybe it was because I picked it up for PS3 and that had the weakest reviews but that's a moot point because it's still around Uncharted. Regardless, I liked the Uncharted games but nowhere near as much as many of the other games from last generation and I don't think they're on the same level as a lot of those games (despite generally being received as such by formal reviews).

Super Smash Bros Melee. I like the game and think it's a good fighter in that is simplistic enough that just about anyone can pick up and play. But I don't think it's as good as a lot of the praise it gets, like being the best GameCube game or the best fighter ever. I could easily name at least fifteen better games on the GameCube and ten fighters better than it.

At this point, I think GTA IV is underrated. I see way more negative feedback than positive now.
For my money, it really is one of the best games ever made. But because it wasn't over the top and funny like its predecessors (or GTA V, for that matter) it seems to catch a bad rep.

Any 3D fighter aside from the Soul Blade/Edge and Soul Calibur series. Tekken, Virtua Fighter, etc. have always felt too sluggish and stilted with move lists that go on for days.

Final Fantasy VII. I've never understood it. I'm a big Final Fantasy fan and I still can't make this game 'click' for me.

MGS5
The open world aspect makes it repetitive since the main missions, side missions and subquests often end up taking you to the same places. There's only so many times you can sneak into the Russian Air Base and it remain interesting.
I'd hesitate to call the game bad. It's a very good game, but far from the perfect, best game ever that some claim it to be. I'd give it a solid 8/10. Take away the open world aspect to get rid of the repetitive aspect of breaking into the same base for the 10th time and I'd rate it higher.

Also its the only game I can think of where you can cross dress. Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga. Luigi has to dress as Peach at one point. As for the topic at hand, I don't know about MOST overrated, but one that I think has gotten unjust high ratings is Ice Climber. It mostly get that praise due to the Smash Bros. connection, but the game itself is...not that good.
