Well compared to what else we have in the WWE, he one of the best they got. Lets faces it, announcing in wrestling in general is not that great of a scene. Looking around at how nobody in the WWE outside of Graves and the newer guy who does CWC, nobody else has been that good. If he turns you off on Raw, how did Lawler and JBL do for you? Lawler been bad since really 2002. Oh, God, I hate everything about Jerry Lawler. JBL was pretty good in the mid 2000s but I can actually put up with him today, even as a buzzword machine. In JBL's defense (yeah, that's right), he's been tolerable on SmackDown Live since week 2 (shaky opening week where he shouted over everyone aside).

I'll agree with his early NXT work being better until he was called up to the Raw roster, but man he got on my frickin' nerves at Takeover.

He's not as good on Raw as on NXT to be sure, because Vince ruins commentators, but I still find him way more tolerable than JBL, Ranallo, and Cole. And Otunga and Saxton I guess but they're barely there.

I'm a fan but this RAW run has been everything I feared. He has completely disappeared outside the times he is told to yell something stupid. Completely lost everything that was works down in NXT. It's because the three-man commentary format really sucks. It COULD be done well, but WWE doesn't care. The two-man format usually writes itself even if the pairing is awkward. Like, even Tazz and Jim Ross had chemistry. Trios in literally anything you've watched usually follow some kind of archetype. Id, Ego, Superego. Matron, Maiden, Crone. Curly, Larry, Moe. But the McMahons don't try to get the commentators to gel or have chemistry outside of the odd insult, and it shows.

Corey varies for me. There are times I like him and find him funny, others I just wish he'd just shut up. Lately? I think he's just been trying too hard.

He's doing OK on RAW, but there's a really noticeable difference between him on RAW and him on NXT. And it's not just the absence of Phillips.

Jeez, if you think Graves is bad with shitting on babyfaces I'd hate to hear your thoughts on Bobby Heenan.

I believe that Graves having to split line for line with Byron Saxton is the biggest problem with either of the announcing teams. I think he'd be great if he developed chemistry with Cole, instead of this overly structured, taking turns saying prepared statements style of commentary.

From what little I seen of him...I think he just comes off as a stooge. Just a goofball that I can't take seriously. This entire commentary team makes me wish for them to go back to the old days of King & JR. Even the combo of Tazz & Cole were better than this team.

To be honest, if a guy can't be really good, I just hope he's easy enough to ignore.
Graves achieves the latter for me, thus improving Raw's commentary tenfold from where it was.

This literally isn't true though. Went back and watched Raw to check. Specific examples of him quoted exactly, hyping up positive things by the babyfaces. When I read what you'd said I raised an eyebrow, because I've always found him very good about hyping up babyfaces so I went back and checked.
Roman vs Jericho: "Roman was an absolute maniac last night. If he can channel that momentum tonight against Jericho, he'll be your fourth man next week."
Rusev vs Big Cass: "Those rights from Cass have to feel like sledgehammers to the abdomen! Rusev's body has got to be racked with pain right now."
Bayley vs Dana Brooke: "Last year in this building, she won the NXT women's championship."
He talks about their specific accomplishments or attributes in positive ways. But I mean, the dude is a heel. He comes at things with a heels mindset. Of course he's not going to hype the faces up as much when he has a fundamental disagreement with their philosophy.

I do think he could learn to balance it a bit better but he's still the best thing about the Raw commentary team to me.

Am I the only poster who doesn't like Corey at all? I think it was a mistake making this thread. No way, the thread's fine. People are gonna disagree, that's fine too. I'm on the fence with Graves. Could go either way. He hasn't annoyed me too much yet, but it wouldn't take much more for me to fall onto the "dislike" side.

Graves on Raw is about as depressing as I thought it would be, because both the Raw and Smackdown teams have the chemistry of new stepdads trying to connect with their spouse's kids. Corey Graves throws out quips that Tom Phillips would have no problem running with, but the Raw/Smackdown teams are rarely good any back and forth discussion.

I think working with Cole and Saxton probably brought him down, because on the other side of the coin, over on SmackDown, this is the best JBL's been since he first came back.
