Thousands upon thousands of examples. Injuries (as well as loser leave town matches) were often the route promotions took to explain wrestlers leaving when headed to a new territory. Post-territories, variety of examples and reasons. Hogan being "hospitalized" by Earthquake complete with Tugboat doing the "get well soon" bit for him as a way to get all the kiddos on the WWF mailing list - Hogan was actually off shooting a movie. I want to say that movie was Suburban Commando

Shawn Michaels both head injury and lost smile His injuries were legit and very common in a lot of work places. Not just sports.

Luger's forearm with a metal plate. Is that kayfabe or does he actually have a plate in his arm.

I have my suspicions on Bob Orton's broken arm. Did they ever mention how he broke it and why Piper would hire a bodyguard who seems to be fragile.

I think the break at some point was real, but he used the cast prop longer than needed. As for why he'd hire him, probably because he had a built-in weapon. I think CM Punk had at least one "injury" that was taped up to cover a tattoo he had just had applied. That's not an uncommon example, though, since I think Orton and Batista have possibly done the same.

The first one I thought of was the famous 'blinding' of Junkyard Dog by the Freebirds.

I don't know it for a fact, but I just know it's true....HBK's back injury at Rumble with Taker. It's always been the narrative, but I think it was mostly a work to cover up what a complete f***ing mess he was at that point. I'm not saying there was no injury at all, but I think his main career ending injury was being a f***ing pillhead.

Does Bobby Heenan and his neckbrace count? I don't know if it was before or during his legit neck problems.

Would Road Dogg and internal injuries at the hands of Jericho count? I think Dogg was about to be suspended for something

These used to be pretty common, sometimes to build heat and sometimes so the guy could just head to a new territory to pick up some work while selling his injuries. For example, Crusher Blackwell vanished for the summer in the AWA after Brody and Abby mauled him. He went and worked in the South and Japan.

Meltz just talked about this on twitter and confirmed the injury

I know he got surgery in his back, but to be out of action for nearly four and a half years (Or more than two years if you count that match he had in his promotion TWA), I think it was more of his personal demons than a back injury. Plus, it was said that in his match with Triple H at Summerslam 2002, he was fine after the match. He just did a damn good job at selling the injury.

How about when Rick Martel blinded Jake Roberts when he sprayed him in the eyes with arrogance. Jake actual wore very light contact lenses to sell the injury.
