This might be a small thing, but he mentioned Hector Rondon up in the bullpen in the 8th inning...he never got up, it was always Pedro Strop. He even corrected himself by saying it was Strop, but Rondon had just sat down. You can tell that he hadn't called a game recently tonight, although, I also think he's normally pretty bad.

In days of yore, nationally televised baseball playoff games would be called by an announcer from each of the participating teams in the series, taking turns every few innings. Awhile after that, the World Series would most often be called by Vin Scully, the universally recognized best talent of his generation, and numerous other generations.

How we got to where we are now, I can't begin to fathom it. Buck is awful, ESPN's team is arguably worse, Fox Sports subjects its audience to Harold Reynolds, etc. People talk about baseball losing national popularity so much and it's absolutely true, but I can't help but wonder if some of that loss stems from having national broadcast crews almost entirely comprised of awful announce teams.

Right. Along those lines on a bigger scale is just the lack of marketing and--even more importantly--not allowing baseball just to be baseball. It's the dumbest thing to hear how ashamed baseball "progressives" are about their own game. It's not football. It's not soccer. It's baseball. Joe Buck right now is fine. He's far from the best but he's also quite significantly separated from the worst. I feel like a lot of the vitriol directed at Buck is residual criticism from the mid-2000s when Buck was actually the worst national broadcaster in sports. I don't know who got into his ear around 2003-04, but Buck out of nowhere became so subdued and so constrained in his calls that it actively took away from the game.

There's a video floating around YouTube that shows the final outs of the World Series since the late 1980s, and Buck's calls went from appropriately boisterous for the culmination of the season and the crowning of a champion to an almost dour affair. And although I've never heard it since the night of the game itself, his most notorious undersell was the David Tyree helmet catch in Super Bowl XLII. From about 2003 through 2009, Buck actually was the worst, but since then he's been average to slightly above average.

He's not as good as Al Michaels or Mike Emrick or Mike Tirico or Verne Lundquist for national sportscasters, but he's much better than Jim Nantz, Dan Shulman, Mike Breen, or Sean McDonough.

The crazy thing is if you going to force someone off MLB Network to do commentary than go grab Smoltz who does games for the network already or even Billy Ripken who is at least funny. Anyone except crazy man Eric Byrnes.

TBS as far as baseball playoffs I think has been decent. I like Ron, Ernie, and Cal as I can at least listen to them and they don't always try to talk over each other to get a BS point across.

I like Mike Breen though he's pretty good, tho I listen to him a lot as a Knick fan. We could always spin this off as who's the worst "color commentators" which for me is Harold Reynolds, John Gruden, and Mark Jackson(2nd stint)

Buck still actively takes away from exciting football games. He doesn't emote. He isn't invested into the action like Michaels or Enberg or pretty much any other play by play guy, who all call the action better than him. He just yells one word and continues on his way. "Pass......CAUGHT!" "Over the MIDDLE!" All just canned calls. And they're BAD calls. He's not even describing what is happening. Just saying a pass is caught is the absolute bare minimum. And what is so special about the middle? He tries to fill in afterwards what happened or what players they're trying to get involved, but he's PAINFULLY slow at knowing players and being descriptive in-play.

I'd easily take Shulman or Nantz over him at any given point in time. I'm also a huge fan of hockey, but Doc Emrick just isn't worth being grouped in with those guys. Good, not great announcer.

I like Gruden. He is a little too positive about everybody. But he knows offense like few other booth guys, and I actually learn things from him.
