Or just be a huge star in a place like Japan or Mexico.
Who you got?
I think Ziggler has to leave at some point. Dude is just spinning his wheels there. Could be huge in NJPW or ROH for a couple years then pull a Brock and return to a big money contract.

Swagger
WWE seem to see value as him as a jobber but I can see him leaving next year and heading to Japan.

Ziggler will be gone by Summerslam. He's already probably quite comfortable financially so the money would be easier for him to walk away from.

I feel that if Ziggler left, he'd just go do his standup or try to get acting gigs.
Probably Hunico to Mexico if he doesn't stay out of trouble.

Has anyone ever left WWE and succeeded in the indies?
I know it depends on what you classify as success. Obviously they will not make as much money. But they may go and win a title elsewhere, but is that title really worth more than a mid card WWE title? Even if you class TNA as an indy, many WWE start have left gone to TNA had instant titles or huge wins, but still all feel like consolation prizes.
Can they make a living? Sure, but I bet in their heart of hearts they are disappointed they couldn't make it in WWE. Even someone like Cody Rhodes who asked for his release must still feel the frustration of never really getting over in WWE and feel like his career is somewhat of a failure.

Swagger. In Japan he'd probably be seen as a damn ring general.

It depends, and sometimes they make their way back. Like, BJ Whitmer probably doesn't yearn for the days of Gunner Scott, but that is real low on the totem pole. Lashley might feel better off, but he has TNA and Bellator, so he probably is paid considerably better than most.

The Ascension.
They have the perfect mix of what could translate to it:
Low enough on the totem pole to likely be on the chopping block.
Had small enough of a WWE run that you could make an argument they were "held back" by WWE a bit.
They have a perfect mix for a sustained indy career: Their long NXT run gave them just enough street cred so they could probably get at least a look from the major indies, they have the look and power wrestling style that'd probably make them get really over in Japan, and they have dark, brooding, gothic characters (which tend to do fairly well in Mexico.)

ETA: Missed by seconds.

I can't help but think someone in power really likes the Ascension. At least enough to keep them around.

Juice Robinson could be a good example of someone who found greener pastures after leaving the WWE for NJPW and has improved a ton as a result as well.

Even though it looks like things are turning around for him I'm still not convinced that Cesaro's not one bad booking away from taking off and setting indie wrestling on fire. But otherwise I would agree with others that Swagger is prime for an indie reinvention.
