WEEDS. Although I really liked the entire series I felt the first season was more believable and as the show went one it just started getting more and more unrealistic
Survivor. The first season was something I`ve never seen before and it seemed like those people really were living off the land. As the show moved on it started to get easier for the contestants

"Community" was the first show that came to my mind when I read the subject of this thread. I remember it absolutely hitting it out of the park in the first season, as it was more than able to carry its own weight in a loaded Thursday night NBC lineup alongside "Parks & Recreation", "The Office", and "30 Rock". Looking back on it, it also peaked in the first season, but even as terrible as the show got from seasons 3 through 6, it still can't drag down how phenomenally well the series started. I'd also like to throw out "30 Rock" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" as shows that had very solid first seasons. While neither were the best seasons, they very clearly established the characters, their motives, their interests, and what was going to make the show funny for years to come.

Rescue Me. Strong first season. It went 7, but the first one might actually be the only good season.

Lost, Heroes and Prison Break all at around the same time had excellent first seasons and disappointing second ones.

Bending the rules, but since they labelled it "series 1" then I'm just gonna go ahead and name the 1st series of the Dr.Who revival in 2005. It's had its ups and downs since, but making this massive, grounded sci-fi adventure out of, in mainstream views, what had become a pop-cultural punchline or a nostalgia pop is something few would have conceived in 2003 when it was announced. But, there was Eccleston's Doctor and suddenly everybody saw/discovered what everybody once loved about the show.

The wire bunk and mcnaulty at the crime scene and who can forget poor Wallace. Where's Wallace, String!? Seriously, The Wire is easily my top pick. The Shield also had an amazing first season same with Justified.

Cheers.
But then again, Cheers didn't have a bad season.

If we're talking about best first seasons in general, Game Of Thrones has to be up there. If we're talking about the first season being the best season, it's a tight race. But that first season set up so much stuff and didn't pull any punches.
