Heroes *sigh* it could've been a legendary show if it kept up that momentum. Lost had such a great first season, kept me coming back to learn more. Flash season one was tier 1 This. Lost's first season was epic. I watched religiously, posted on show MBs, read fan theories, and of course the Oceanic website or whatever that was like a hunt for clues and shit. By the start of season 3, I had just stopped watching. I still haven't even watched half the series. To be fair, that first season was so brilliant and built so well, that I don't really think anything could happen that would have met the expectations. Then again, once they opened the hatch, my disappointment knew no bounds. Freaks and Geeks, Survivor, Community, and Prison Break are all very good suggestions as well.

Once Upon A Time, season one. Which might be the one purely good season. Others haven't captured the magic (no pun intended) going down to the not-appointment TV it has become for me.

Banshee after the first episode knew you were in for a mad ride and man did it deliver.

I'll add another vote for Community.
Also, Scrubs.
While neither of those shows hit their comedy peak in Season 1, I just thought both were brilliantly written. The stories and characters were so well developed. And the big storyline developments that happen in each's season finale really made me want more.
They are probably the only two sitcoms where I felt like I couldn't wait for Season 2 to see what happened next.

The original Doctor Who series is something pretty spectacular to behold. You start off with "An Unearthly Child", what seems like a typical mystery story about a strange girl at a London school, then all of a sudden you're in the Stone Age on an adventure. Second story? Introduces one of the most recognisable alien species in TV/Film history along with tons of other astounding sci fi imagery. Then that's followed up with a short bottle episode (before that was even really a thing) tying everything together.
That's a perfect run as it is. But that's not even the end of the season. Then you get: - Marco Polo - The Keys Of Marinus - The Aztecs - The Sensorites - The Reign Of Terror
In there, you get a great mix of the historical and sci-fi sides of the show, educating children while also providing some amazing drama. The Aztecs in particular is probably one of the finest stories in the entire 50+ year run, defining the show's version of time travel in dramatic ways that even revered later stories could only hope to attempt to duplicate. If I had to show someone just one single story to tell them "Here, no context, no explanations, this here is what Doctor Who is about", that's the one I'd probably pick.
All in a single season. Magnificent.

Season 2 is excellent as well, but season 1 of The Flash might be my favorite season of any show. It's soooo damn good.
Also, yes, Mr. Robot was fantastic and it's kind of a shame that season 2 was so lackluster.

Magnificent. I always find those early William Hartnell episodes very interesting to watch. Since they hadn't developed the traditional Doctor/Companion formula yet, the show had a much more ensemble cast feel to it with William Russell being every bit the leading man that William Hartnell was. Even Barbara and at times Susan were driving the episodes much more then just about any other classic series or even modern series companions. This pretty much ended when Russell and Jacqueline Hill left the show.

I'd plead a case for The West Wing having an amazing first season, running from decent at worst to absolute classic television at best (Celestial Navigation, the pilot, In Excelius Deo being the high water marks).
If we are talking classic television, what about first seasons of I Love Lucy, Twilight Zone and Star Trek?

"Community" was the first show that came to my mind when I read the subject of this thread. I remember it absolutely hitting it out of the park in the first season, as it was more than able to carry its own weight in a loaded Thursday night NBC lineup alongside "Parks & Recreation", "The Office", and "30 Rock". Looking back on it, it also peaked in the first season, but even as terrible as the show got from seasons 3 through 6, it still can't drag down how phenomenally well the series started. Well I'm on the Community reddit board and had lots of convo with different Community fans, and I can assure you that most like seasons 2, 3 and 1 the most (in this exact order). Very few think 3 isn't good at all as you seem to think, that's my favorite season btw (timelines, dreamatorium, Annie's move, 8bit videogame, halloween episodes...) So yeah season 1 wasn't THAT well-received compared to S2, but it was a phenomenal season no doubt

First season of Fargo and Justified are fantastic. I liked the subsequent seasons that followed too, but those shows had strong opening seasons. I still think the Justified pilot episode is one of the best series premieres ever.
