I often hear people who grew up in the 80s complain about how lame go-bots were. I never got that as i had lots of the toys as a kid and loved them. They even had alt-modes that transformers never had (were there any limo transformers?). Sure, the names were cheesy (even as a kid i cringed at a character called "Jeeper Creeper") but the toys themselves were just as good as Transformers IMO.

I loved them and I used to watch the show all of the time. Transformers was still my favorite between the two. I remember some of the toys. They were smaller than the Transformers, right? I think they were the same size as Bumblebee and Brawn, but were smaller than Optimus and Ironhide.

The names were no cheesier than the Transformers to be honest. Yeah I liked em. I used them interchangeably with the Transformers I had.

I remember when I was very little preferring Go-Bots simply because I remember them being smaller and easier to transform. Maybe I'm remembering wrong.

I wanted Optimus Prime toy and my family bought me an orange Go-Bot robot that became a truck.
Their reasoning was - well it's a robot and it's a truck. Isn't that what you wanted?
I hated the Go-Bot f***ers since then.

I loved them, but I loved Transformers more. Even as a little kid, I thought the Go-Bots toys were cool but that the cartoon sucked. Transformers had cool toys, and the cartoon was the best damn American cartoon of the 80's.
Now that Hasbro owns the rights, I really wish they would use more Go-Bots characters in the IDW comics. Forget the human brains in them thing, just have them be either Cybertronians or from one of the other Titan colonies.

In case you were wondering what happened to them.

In case you were wondering what happened to them. That's pretty much the greatest thing ever.

Yeah, I think people's memories of the Go-Bots are tainted by the cartoon being inferior to the Transformers and the toyline not enduring. But the toys were great, and they had a lot of cool tie-in merchandise like cameras and stuff. The good guy base that turned into an AT-AT and the bad guy base that turned into a rocketship were my two favorite toys of all as a kid.
If Hasbro hadn't bought out Tonka, I'm sure there would have been a Go-Bots revival by now. It probably wouldn't have been any more successful than the various attempts at bringing back Voltron or Thundercats, but at least there would still be some semblance of a presence in the marketplace. As it is, with Hasbro owning the IP and doing nothing with it since they also own Transformers, it perpetuates this sort of WCW-esque revisionist history that Go-Bots were nothing but cheap imitators that couldn't hang with the big boys.

I remember owning this red and blue Go-bots rifle that became a robot. It could fire those round red caps too for a loud "bang" effect. So awesome! One of my favorite toys ever, actually.

I remember GoBots being more durable than Transformers because they were made of metal where the others were more often than not plastic.
They were smaller, but the nostalgia really kicks in for me due to them not being revived en masse like the Transformers.

Never got a chance to watch the show, but I would pick up the toys because they were cheaper than Transformers.
Although they weren't as good as transformers. They were like Short Bus Transformers.

It was something to watch as a kid. Had a few of the toys. Bug Bite who changed into a yellow VW Beetle (gee, where did they get that idea). Stacks or Stax or whatever to changed into a orange juggernaut truck cab (when i was six I asked mum for Optimus Prime for my birthday, I described him as a robot truck... this is what I ended up with,,, f***ing Gobots!) and one that changed into a Space Shuttle.. forget the name. Knowing the show it was probably Shuttle.
I tried watch the Gobots/Rocklords movie (yes that exists!) on YouTube a few years ago for a live tweet thing. I had to stop cause the voice acting was giving me a headache .. it was beyond awful.

They were kind of the generic soda version of the Transformers in every way. When you couldn't afford Transformers, or the Transformers weren't available (In toy, cartoon, or comic book form) then the Go-Bots would suffice. However, if you could get/watch/read Transformers, you would slap the Go-Bots to the curb and get, watch, or read Transformers instead. And as far as comics go, there was no Go-Bots comic that was ever produced that was as bad ass as this Transformers cover.

I hated the Go-Bot f***ers since then. I know the GoBot you're talking about. I was lucky because I had an older cousin who had Transformers so the're was no mistaking the characters I wanted. But if I was in your shoes that would have scared me for life. My ass would have gone to prison, gotten a degree while I was in, and came hom and told my mom, "Well you always wanted to graduate from school". What's funny to me is that as a kid robots, ninjas, and wrestling was all you had to say for me to buy into whatever it was.
