According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Ranallo’s absence was not due to the weather. Host Dave Meltzer wrote that while WWE claimed Otunga was filming a movie and Ranallo was held back by the weather, “at least half of that was true, since Otunga was out filming a movie.” Co-host Bryan Alvarez asked what he meant, and Meltzer replied that he could not talk about it.
Because Ranallo’s contract is supposedly running out, many suspect that he has stopped caring since he is on his way out. Others have noticed he had become a lot more flustered in recent weeks, often flubbing lines or getting names wrong. He constantly called the Elimination Chamber match “Hell in a Cell,” and has repeatedly referred to WWE Superstar Curt Hawkins as “Chad Hawkins.” Many also feel that the presence of Phillips at the announce table is throwing Mauro off his game. Phillips is seen as a replacement for Ranallo and a “message,” although it is much more probable that he is there to learn and eventually replace either Ranallo or play-by-play announcer Michael Cole.
His absence was also met with criticism from some former WWE commentators. JBL also took a shot at his broadcast colleague, writing on Twitter:
.@mauroranallo I made the show, everyone made the show, everyone. Maybe he shouldn't have bashed me if he wasn't going to show up.

.@0fficialtaz @mauroranallo Great video-trying to shock me-We could have talked about it but you didn't show up for work. Everyone else did.

Ranallo deleted all references to being a WWE announcer on his Twitter account. As of right now, he is under contract to WWE through 8/12.
John Layfield may have put his foot in his mouth this morning. When asked about Justin Roberts and when they stole Roberts' passport while he was in Europe, Layfield said, "I won't answer net rumors, but I didn't take Justin Roberts passport. Could have been anyone. He was hated by the whole crew. He's an idiot." In an article hours later, John Hennigan (Mundo) was quoted as saying that on that trip, Layfield asked he and Joey Mercury to steal Roberts' passport. Hennigan talked in the article about how he knew if he did it he'd no longer be bullied, but he wouldn't do it because he wouldn't have wanted something like that done to him, and figured he got heat for not doing it. There's more on that in this Deadspin story about Layfield. Forbes has a story on Layfield as well.

CBS: MAURO RANALLO NOT RETURNING TO WWE
by Mike Johnson @ 5:53 PM on 4/8/2017
Brian Campbell of CBS Sports is reporting that Mauro Ranallo will not be returning to work for World Wrestling Entertainment, citing sources close to the situation. Ranallo had missed several weeks of WWE TV broadcasts while dealing with depression issues and yesterday, had removed WWE from all of his social media.
Ranallo's close friend, MMA personality Bas Rutten has publicly blamed Ranallo's announcing partner JBL as being the cause of Ranallo's latest bout with depression. Yesterday, JBL publicly wished Ranallo well and remarked that he was playing a "heel" on television, apparently in reference to the idea that his comments may have sparked Ranallo's problems.
A WWE spokesperson told PWInsider.com earlier today that Ranallo remains under contract to the company until August 2017.
CBS is one of the owners of Showtime, which is broadcasting a boxing event tonight featuring Ranallo on commentary.

Essentially WWE would be paying him to keep quiet.

The WWE has initiated settlement talks with Mauro Ranallo's representatives. It was pretty much incumbent that was going to have to happen.

Ex-SmackDown Live announcer Mauro Ranallo has confirmed he parted ways with WWE … but contrary to the rumor mill, he says it has nothing to do with JBL bullying him.
Mauro released a statement to Newsweek saying, “WWE and I have mutually agreed to part ways. It has nothing to do with JBL.” The company reiterated that he’s under contract until August.
WWE also spoke with the publication and said that although no formal complaint was filed, they investigated the recent alleged situation with John Layfield.
Since he still has a job there, it’s clear their search yielded no results.
JBL also sent a statement to Newsweek: “Admittedly, I took part in locker room pranks that existed within the industry years ago. WWE addressed my behavior and I responded accordingly, yet my past is being brought up because of recent unfounded rumors. I apologize if anything I said playing ‘the bad guy’ on a TV show was misconstrued.”
