I know I'm not dumb (not like everybody says), but was I supposed to not have any idea WTF is going on?
Like, I think I kind of understood season 1, but now I feel like I'm on drugs every time I watched an episode of season 2.

It was really well made but not all that interesting. Big step down from the first season, I thought.

It can make your brain hurt a bit. As for the season as a whole? It REALLY felt like they were spinning their wheels. It just didn't have that strong focus that the first season had.

If not, it'll start to add up, but it did feel rather incomplete.

I think having the show runner directing every episode did weaken the second season. Like having to showrun, write, and direct every episode is a daunting task

It took me a LONG time to get through that Season 2 set on Blu-Ray. Those first couple of episodes can be really rough, it felt like punishment. But, I think around episode 6 or 7 everything starts to come together. The big twist/reveal isn't as strong as Season 1's, but at least they tried.

Now that I think about it, I believe there were two things that stood out to me:
1. Just how little the main character is in the show. It seemed like 70% of this season was about Darlene, Angela, Streep's kid, Swedish guy's wife, etc.
2. It seemed they were on a Twin Peaks-like trajectory of almost everyone needing to be wacky or strange. You know a backwards-talking dwarf was right around the corner
