A common phrase announcers have said over the years in some random undercard match being referred to as "this could be a main event anywhere in the world!" What are some of the worst abuses of this phrase? I was randomly thinking about Corey Maclin one time on one of the incarnations of Memphis Wrestling circa 2005-06 saying Matt Morgan vs Spellbinder (aka Phantasio in WWF) as a main event anywhere in the world.

I seem to recall an episode of Prime Time, where a bout between Junkyard Dog and Jim Neidhart, wrestling single despite being one half of the tag team champions at the time, earining this moniker.

CIMA Vs Australian Wrestler TNT in 2007 had the promoter (Who funnily enough IS TNT) proclaiming online that the match could main event any independent card around the world.

I can't recall the opponent, but I'm sure I heard Gorilla use it during a Skinner match once.

This was overstated a lot in the WWE during the 80s, Gorilla was bad with it. I remember him saying this during a Koko B. Ware match and I thought, sure a main event on a C show. Ventura was usually more believable with it, like Jake vs Honky Tonk at Wrestlemania III and Savage vs Steamboat for the IC title on Superstars before Wrestlemania III, especially since those matches actually did main event cards on their tours.

I think gorilla liked to call santana a main eventer I remember this. Almost every damn non-jobber Tito match, Gorilla would hail as a main event. "Boy, Jess...these fans are sure getting a treat. Tito versus Valentine is a main event anywhere in the world!" -Monsoon, circa 1992

I can't recall the opponent, but I'm sure I heard Gorilla use it during a Skinner match once. I hope he was joking, like when Brooklyn Brawler wrestled and Gorilla said that Brawler trained at the Terry Garvin wrestling school.

I always hated this saying.
Technically, ANY match can be a main event anywhere in the world. All you have to do is say "This is our main event", and it is. "Main Event" is just an idea, not an absolute.
It's just like saying "Air is breathable anywhere where air is available". No shit.

I swear I heard this during a match between Rene Goulet & Salvatore Bellomo around 1985. I was gonna mention Sal. For some reason, Gorilla said this during a Sal match (possibly this one).

I think the spirit it's said in is "these two guys could sell out an arena". Obviously that's not always the case.

I think Gorilla might have been trolling there. I recall one mention like this for Warlord vs. Tatanka in 1992. Crush and Papa Shango as well.

I swear I heard this during a match between Rene Goulet & Salvatore Bellomo around 1985. This match could jerk the curtain at arenas across the northeastern United States!
