Watching as a 9 year old, I remember basically accepting it, but it felt weird seeing Yokozuna in the tag title scene at the same time Mabel was on top, when Yoko still came off as tougher and more threatening.

Couldn't tell ya, I completely missed 95 and didn't see 1 second of Mabel... Not that I'm bragging or anything 😀 I'm in this camp. I started buying ECW videos, and our friend down the street got the WCW PPVs. I might have had the WWF on, I just don't remember much of anything between WM XI and Rumble 1996.

Yes I think a redesign would've worked wonders, Lose the early 90's hip hop look (It looked daft)and update it with a Gangsta Rap look ala Biggie Smalls GANGSTER BOOGIE from Brooklyn, New York

Don't think it helped who he was working with at that time. Also needed to change the look instead of just adding a crown. If he'd been wrestling Bret & Shawn instead of Diesel & Undertaker it may be looked upon more favourably as the matches should be better. It's more likely he would have hurt them too. He was dropping his full weight onto people with little regard for their wellbeing, neither Bret nor Shawn are talented enough to get a passable match from someone like that. Nash claims that he asked Mabel to please not use that move on him, but Mabel did it anyway, i think that the move hasn't been done since it's just to dangerous.

Only thing I can really remember about Mabel from that time (I was like 3) was when he broke Taker's face with the leg drop.

The Mabel push was so hideous that I flat out refused to ever watch SS 95 on account of him main eventing it. Ironically when I finally saw the show in the SS box set I thought it was quite a good PPV other than the main event, so the Mabel push kept me from seeing a solid show.

I think Michaels could have. Bret was more ground-based and would have had a harder time. A flyer was really the only style they could have successfully put against him, so that he could pinball the little guy around and look big while they played up the David vs. Goliath feel.

He would've been a better monster heel in a different era.
Did the Big Daddy V push come from them trying to build "monsters" For Cena?

Objectively, yes... it was pretty terrible. But that was a "throw shit at a wall" period for WWF as a whole. It almost felt like Vince was just using wrestlers as action figures and playing with them in his room with little regard for making it entertaining for anyone else. It was still a big cartoon character era and it felt like the gimmick had to be bigger than the person portraying it and didn't really matter how much actual ability they had. So it felt inevitable for Mable to go heel at some point, just because he wasn't just a fat guy, he was a tall fat guy. Of course you're gonna have to pit him against faces and he instantly has credibility (in the bookers eyes) because of his size.
It's one of those things where, due to that, I can't just say "Yeah, King Mabel was a bad idea." because it was par for the course for that time. So much was just a bad idea, that I remember Monday Night Raw being a chore to get through, and at that age... I was still willing to take a LOT of bullshit and still try to get on board with it. I was cool with Kona Crush, I was cool with Max frickin' Moon, I was even cool with Battle Kat.. hell, I gave "Make a Difference" Fatu a chance. But that time period, I could FEEL the boredom even as I watched and attempted to make the best of it.

It wasn't a bad push, it wasn't a good push, it was THE push.

Really, who else could they have pushed? The kliq cut the legs out of anyone else that could have been in that spot.

I remember Newz around the time that they wanted Cena to have a group of monster type guys so he could overcome the odds. You had Umaga, Khali moved to Raw, Mark Henry repushed and guys like Viscera and Snitsky get repackaged.

I wasn't watching at the time, but it kind of feels like, if, say today you just suddenly out of the blue had Big Cass win a tournament and immediately jump into top heel status without changing a single thing about him doing it. Which would be all sorts of terrible.

I'm actually in the minority that likes Mabel as a worker, but then I love freakishly big people in wrestling. I felt he was actually pretty impressive for someone of his immense size in the ring (although being regularly dangerous is pretty inexcusable). I definitely feel he could have done with being repackaged though in terms of attire and look, but alas, he was someone that was pretty much always stuck with terrible attire... because let's face it, he looked like he was wearing a giant bin bag when he came back as Viscera. This would have been a winning look, which I presume were his street clothes anyway.

it was a precursor to JBL's (and Jinder's) push. career midcarder/jobber suddenly gets treeated as a main event threat with zero buildup. the big difference was back in '95 Vince was actually still willing to listen to the fans when something wasn't working.
